1.1. Chris McCandless was very courageous and often times relied on luck, his dreams, and present opportunities to make tough decisions.
2. 2. First Paragraph
2.1. McCandless ignored society and what his peers thought in order to follow his dreams.
2.2. "' You don't need to worry about me. I have a college education. I'm not destitute. I'm living like this by choice" (Krakauer 51).
2.3. During this chapter in the book, McCandless was getting mixed opinions on his decision to go into the wild. His family and all of society believed that he needed an education and a job in order to make something out of his life. However, McCandless didn't believe in this, he wanted to explore nature and believed adventuring was his future. It took a lot of courage for McCandless to go against what everyone else thought. There were consequences to doing this like losing relationships but he took that risk which proved how courageous he was.
3. 3. Second Paragraph
3.1. Luck and chance partially determined the outcome of McCandless journey and showed how he handled certain situations.
3.2. "' Entering the wilderness purposefully ill-prepared, and surviving a near-death experience does not make you a better human, it makes you damn lucky'" (Krakauer 51)
3.3. This part of the book is explaining how the majority of McCandless's journey went. The quote is stating that being close to death doesn't make you a better person it just means you're lucky. With McCandless leaving parts of his journey up to luck and chance it showed the risks he took and the amount of courage he had. Not many people would go into the wild without a specific plan, however, that's exactly what McCandless did. He handled situations by going along with whatever happened good or bad. Some parts of his journey showed that taking chances paid off and did make him a better person. Without the courage he had to leave his life up to chance, McCandless may not have survived as long as he did.
4. 4. Third Paragraph
4.1. McCandless took the opportunity when it was present and left for his adventure, without leaving any explanation behind.
4.2. "McCandless was thrilled to be on his way north, and he was relieved as well-- relieved that he had again evaded the impending threat of human intimacy, of friendship, and all the messy emotional baggage that comes with it" (Krakauer 55).
4.3. McCandless was never happy with the traditional lifestyle of getting up, going to school or a job and then finishing the day. In this chapter, McCandless was on his way into the wild. He wanted to go on this journey to experience what nature had to offer. Like in the quote, he didn't want the threat of human intimacy which explains why he left without an explanation. McCandless didn't want anyone following him or looking after him along his journey. It took a large amount of courage to leave without saying goodbye to his family or friends. The risk of him getting ill or injured was greater because he didn't have anyone to call if he were put in that type of situation. McCandless was setting himself up to be completely alone knowing there was no one he could lean on. Letting go would be very hard but would showed the amount of courage he had.
