Assessments Door Mind Map: Assessments

1. Summative- A form of assessment where students take an end of the year or end of unit exam that is necessary for report cards and district data but does not have much affect on helping students improve performance.

1.1. Example 1 - End of Year Exam Such as STAAR Tests

1.2. Example 2- Unit Assessments used for District Data and for Student's report cards

1.3. IDEA 1- There are different testing formats such as multiple choice for Math questions, or essay type for the Writing STAAR Test

1.4. IDEA 2- Summative Assessments can give some students high testing anxiety

1.5. IDEA 3- There are ways for students to take summative assessments. The most common way is with paper and pencil but there are some computer adaptive ways to take this type of assessment.

2. Diagnostic- This type of assessment is used for screening purposes in case students have a problem with reading or an ailment that will get in the way of learning.

2.1. Example 1- Screening for Dyslexia

2.3. IDEA 1- Can be useful for teachers to understand where students will have difficulty learning and why.

2.4. IDEA 2- Students will get the support and help that they need in order to be successful within a classroom.

2.5. IDEA 3- Students will be nervous about these screenings but they will help students really focus on their learning needs.

3. Performance- Students are in charge of their performance on these assessment in order to understand what they are learning.

3.1. IDEA 1- Student's have the full responsibility of these assessments

3.2. IDEA 2- Students will be able to reflect on what they are learning if they use a daily journal.

3.3. IDEA 3- When students do individual projects over a topic the student learns while also participating in an assessment.

4. Formative- Process of gathering information about student's understanding. Can be used to change instructional plans. Can be used to change instruction in order to enhance student achievement.

4.3. IDEA 1 - Teacher is constantly giving students feedback on their understanding of a topic.

4.4. IDEA 2- Teacher is gathering information about student learning

4.5. IDEA 3- Formative Assessments has a lot of student to teacher interaction.

5. Interim/Benchmark- Period tests that are taken throughout the year.

5.1. IDEA 1- Can be given every six weeks

5.2. IDEA 2- Low level of teacher involvement and not much student feedback

5.3. IDEA 3- The different types include projects, tests, or written essays

5.4. Example 1- End of Year Project for Texas Revolution where students have to make a Power Point Presentation about a Texas Revolution Hero
