1. The Franks

1.1. They are farmers but loved to make war.

1.2. One of the Germanic tribes that over-ran the Roman Empire in the 5th century .

1.3. Conquered most of Gaul (France)

1.4. "Frank" meant free.

1.5. Had social classes. Either really rich or incredibly poor.

1.6.1. Man-money, that is, a person's value in money.

1.7.1. Intentionally setting fire to property.

1.8. - Betrothal

1.8.1. A promise to marry.

1.9. - Plague

1.9.1. A contagious disease that is out of control and kills many people.

1.10. - Prodigies, portents

1.10.1. Omens, occurences that predict future events.

1.11. -Social Class

1.11.1. The group that one belongs to in a society. Class can be determined by money, role in society, or one's parentage.

2. The Merovingians

2.1. The royal family ruled the Franks for almost three hundred years.

2.2. Clovis I

2.2.1. The most successful ruler in the family was Clovis I, he founded France and made Paris it's capital.

2.3. After Clovis's death, his kids were divided among the kingdom. But they were not capable leaders.

2.4. This royal family became famous for their fighting and murders.

2.5. For the next two centuries, the family was weakened by this constant fighting and the kingdom fell into chaos.

3. Charlemagne

3.1. Came to power of western Europe in 768 C.E.

3.2. Unlike the past rulers, he was very interested in re building civilization.

3.3. - Carolingian Empire

3.3.1. Charlemagne's empire, from about 770 to 814.

3.4. He opened libraries around the kingdom.

3.5. He created a single code of laws for the whole empire.

3.6. Actually tried to make things better for the serfs and tradespeople.

3.9. - Renaissance

3.9.1. A rebirth or revival, especially of the arts.

4. The Anglo-Saxon and The Celts

4.1. Alfred the Great

4.1.1. Was an early ruler of the Anglo-Saxons. His greatest accomplishment was when he died, he left Western and Southern England united.

4.2. Anglo-saxons were farmers and men and women shared the hard work of agriculture between them.

4.3. Anglo-saxons preserved their stories by pasting it on to each person. One would tell the other and it kept going like that.

4.4. The celts had to relocate to Wales, Cornwell, and Scotland and across the sea to Ireland because they were driven out.

4.5. - Celtic Peoples

4.5.1. A western European culture. The Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Cornish, and Bretons are all Celts.

4.6. - Epic

4.6.1. A long poem telling about heroic deeds and events.

4.7. - Prosperous

4.7.1. Thriving.

5. The Vikings

5.1. The vikings were any of the Scandinavian people who raided the coasts of Europe from the 8th to the 11th centuries.

5.2. Most were farmers and fishers. There are also highly skilled workers and smiths.

5.3. The vikings were everywhere and attacked to get what they wanted.

5.4. Viking age 800-1100 (1250 years)

5.5. Viking women has many rights under the law. Women could divorce their husbands and could own property.

5.6. Vikings did all this because they wanted glory/fame and needed to survive.

5.7. - Fjord

5.7.1. A long, narrow salt-water bay with high cliffs along its sides.

5.8. - Skald

5.8.1. A Scandinavian poet who recited poems at formal gatherings.

5.9. - Thing

5.9.1. A parliament where free adults could give their opinions on important matters. Viking kings, were not crowned; instead, they were lifted up standing on shields, at the Thing.

6. The Mediterranean World

6.1. The Mediterranean environment had everything you would need to have to make crops such as; fertile soil, climate that wasn't too hot or cold and tons of rain fall and sunshine. Perfect for crops.

6.2. The sea was a transportation route that encouraged people to travel and trade.

6.3. A great place for large numbers of people to live in.

6.4. Population grew rapidly and towns formed.

6.5. Philosophy- The search for wisdom, ideas, and knowledge

6.7. Roman Legions- Roman armed forces

7. The Romans

7.1. There was three social classes; Patricians, Equites, and Plebeians.

7.2. The family was ruled by the father, who had complete authority over his wife, children and slaves.

7.3. Senate- the main law and policy making body in Rome.

7.4. Worshiped many gods and spirits.

7.5. C.E.-

7.5.1. Of the common era.

7.6. Latin-

7.6.1. The language of the Romans.

7.7. Gladiator-

7.7.1. A fighter who battled at public shows; most were slaves.

7.8. Germanic People-

7.8.1. One of the European peoples that spoke a Germanic languages; for example Angles, Saxons, Jutes etc.

7.9. Barbarian-

7.9.1. Originally, a non-Roman person. "Barbarian" later came to mean "uncultured person." an insult.
