1. General Grant

1.1. Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27th, 1822. He was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He then later died on July 23rd, 1885 from throat cancer. He was best known as the President of the United States from 1869- 1877. He had served two terms as president of the U.S.

2. Abraham Lincoln

2.1. Abraham Lincoln was born on Feb. 12th, 1809. After many years he became known as the 16th president, who also guided our country through the most devistating experience, The Civil War.

3. Confederacy

3.1. The Confederate States of America (also called the Confederacy, the Confederate States, and the CSA) was the government set up from 1861 to 1865 by eleven southern slave states of the United States of America that had declared their seccesion from the U.S. The CSA's de facto control over its claimed territory varied during the course of the American Civil War, depending on the success of its military in battle.

4. Union Army

4.1. The union army was the land force that fought for the Union during the Civil War. It was also known as the Federal Army, the U.S. Army, the Northern Army and the National Army. It consisted of the Small United States Army augmented by massive numbers of units supplied by the Northern states, composed of volunteers as well as conscripts. The Union Army fought and eventually defeated the smaller Confederate States Army during the war which lasted from 1861 to 1865. Of the 2.5 million men who served in the Union Army, approximately 9.1% were recent Irish born immigrants with many more first and second generation Irish Americans also serving. Approximately 9.5% were African American. A smaller percent were Native Americans. About 360,000 died from all causes; some 280,000 were wounded.
