1. The 5 Communication Theory's my group presented

1.1. Face Negotiation

1.1.1. Unhelpful

1.2. Narrative Paradigm

1.2.1. Personally & Professionally helpful

1.3. Genderlect Styles

1.3.1. Personally helpful

1.4. Social Penetration Theory

1.4.1. Personally & Professionally helpful

1.5. Social Judgement Theory

1.5.1. Professionally helpful

2. Theorists presented that benefitted my personal learning

2.1. Genderlect Styles- Although this theory is stereotypical at times, many components of theory I see as generally true & was very interesting to learn about.

2.2. Social Penetration Theory- I have considered this when looking at the development of my close personal relationships. I can apply the 4 phases of the theory to each of my relationships.

2.3. Cultivation Theory- What "Saved by the Bell" wasn't real?

2.4. Expectancy Violations Theory-These three concepts are interrelated when thinking of social cues and communication.

2.5. Media Ecology-very similar to Cultivation Theory presentation was very interesting

2.6. Social Information Processing-Interesting concept, especially in relation to twitter, facebook, etc.

2.7. Uncertainty Reduction Theory- I think "people communicate to alleviate discomfort" was interesting, very true for some people in my experience.

2.8. Spiral of Silence-Just like some talk too much, others will conceal their views to alleviate discomfort. Related concepts and also very true in my experience.

2.9. Narrative Paradigm-Talked with Walter Fisher via email. I definately believe children LOVE to hear & learn through stories

2.10. Muted Group Theory-liked aspects of the role of gender and communication. Linked to Genderlect Styles

2.11. Social Judgement Theory-I had a hard time making connections with this theory. But when thinking about new information I receive I do compartmentalize it into categories such as the theory identifies as 'acceptance, non commitment and rejection'.

2.12. Elaborate Likeliness Model- 2 ways to persuasion. Interesting how media cues into attitudes to persuade.

3. Theorists presented that were less helpful to me

3.1. Face Negotation theory was too culturally specific for me to buy into

3.2. Aristotle's Rhetoric was not made clear during presentation. For me it was too much information to digest. Wiki is hard to follow.

3.3. Cognitive Dissonance parts of presentation was not clear. The wiki, when I read it has great parts but doesn't make the theory clear for me either

3.4. Cultural Studies parts of presentation were unclear. I cannot honestly say I know what this theory is about from the wiki. The 2 encoding and decoding charts on wiki were the most helpful.

3.5. Interactional View I had to step away from computer during presentation and wiki is unclear to me

4. Chera Marshall

5. Theorists presented that benefitted my professional learning

5.1. Narrative Paradigm

5.1.1. Before textbooks information was passed via storytelling. Storytelling is a big part of passing information in the Montessori philosophy

5.2. Constructivism as a Theory of Communication

5.2.1. In physical education we build on fundamental skills. Students learn a basic skill then we develop that skill with more complicated skills-connects with "learning new information with past understanding"

5.3. Cultural Approach to Organizations

5.3.1. TMS definately has its own unique culture defined by image, character and climate. Independent, not for profit schools thrive on this good public image

5.4. Expectancy Violations Theory

5.4.1. Wait time and encouraging verbal & nonverbal prompts allow students to become more verbally engaged in physical educatoin

5.5. Functional Perspective on Group Decision Making

5.5.1. As a team teacher our group regularly needs to follow this theory and its four functions to achieve success

5.6. Spiral of Silence

5.6.1. In PD I see this happening in adult educated group work, I now have greater understanding as to WHY

5.7. Symbolic Interactionism

5.7.1. affects student-teacher relationships the group wiki "student-teacher" examples were very helpful

5.8. Social Penetration Theory

5.8.1. As relationships with students (during coaching) and team teachers grow I have experienced the 4 phases of social penetration theory
