Prayer by Mind Map: Prayer

1. What to Pray For?

1.1. Wisdom

1.1.1. Lord, I pray that You would give me Wisdom in everything I do. I know Wisdom is better than gold and understanding better than silver, so make me rich in wisdom and wealthy in understanding. Increase my wisdom and knowledge so I can see Your truth in every situation. Give me discernment for each decision I make. Lord, help me to always seek godly counsel and not to look to the world and people who don't know You for answers. Thank You, Lord, that "You will show me the path of life." Help me to know and undersatnd Your Word so I can get it into my soul and heart. Lord, You ahve said that whoever trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered. I don't want to trust my own heart. I want to trust Your Word and Your instruction so that I can walk wisely and ever do ignorant or stupid things. Make me a wise person. Give me the wisdom, knowledge, understanding, direction, and discernment I need to keep me away from the plans of evil so that I will walk safely and not stumble. Lord, I know that in You "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" Help me to discover those treasures. In Jesus' Name I pray.

1.2. Counsel

1.2.1. Always ask God about things before you ask anyone else

1.2.2. Lead me away from ungodly counsel and toward people who have godly wisdom

1.2.3. I pray the person I'm going to has wisdom and knowledge to impart to me.

1.3. Positive Outlook

1.3.1. Lord, I pray that You will give me the strength to resist negative emotions such as anxiety, anger, dissatisfaction, envy, depression, bitterness, rejection, hopelessness, and fear. Rescue me when"my spirit is overwhelmed within me; when my hear within me is distressed." I refuse to let my life be brought down by negative emotions because I know You have a better quality of life for me than that. When I am tempted to give in to these feelings, help me to remember all that is true about You. You said in Your Word that by our patience we can possess our souls. Give me the patience and understanding to be in control of my emotions. Help me to keep my "heart with all diligence," for I knwo that "out of it spring the issues of life." Help me to not be insecure and focused on myself. Help me focus on You and other people. Help me not be oversensitive to myself, but rahter be sensitive to the needs of other people. Thank You, Lord, You will hear my voice and answer me. May the joy of knowing You fill my heart at all times so I can live in Your joy and peace. In Jesus' Name I pray.

1.4. Resisting Temptation

1.4.1. Lord, make me strong so I don't fall into any traps of the enemy. Do not allow me to be led into temptation, but deliver me from the evil one and his plans for my downfall. The area I am most concerned about is (name any area where you might be tempted). In the Name of Jesus I break any hold temptation has on me. Help me to resist anything that would tempt me away from all You have for me. I pray that I will have no secret thoughts where I entertain ungodly desires to do or say something I shouldn't. I pray that I will have no secret life where I do things I would be ashamed to have others see. Don't allow the enemy to sneak up on my blind side and take me by surprise! Lord I know You have called me to purity. Help me to "cling to what is good" and keep myself pure. Help me to seperate myself from all that is not of You, and not have confusion about this. Give me discernment to recognize anything in my life that is worthless so I can get rid of it. Set me free from any weakness that could lead me away from all You have for me. Thank You that You know "how to deliver the godly out of temptations". Thank You for delivering me out of all temptation and keeping it far from me. In Jesus Name. I pray

1.4.2. Why?

1.4.2.1. Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

1.4.2.2. God, who is faithful, will not allow you to be tempted beyon what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

1.4.2.3. People dont realize how great the consequences are when they give into sexual temptation

1.4.2.4. When people fall into sex sins of any kind, even when they repent and receive God's forgiveness, they lose what could have been if this sin had never happened.

1.4.2.5. Recognize Satan's plan to destroy your life and seperate you from all God has for you and stand firm, knowing you are not going to allow him to do it. Don't stop praying until the temptation is gone.

1.4.2.6. We are tempted by the enemy and we are tempted by what our flesh wants

1.4.2.7. Don't ever think you are immune to temptation.

1.4.2.8. Temptation can happen anytime and often when you least expect it.

1.4.2.9. If you know who you are in the Lord, you won't fall for it

1.4.2.10. Jesus' temptation happened just before the greatest breakthrough in His life. It will happen before the greatest breakthrough in yours too.

1.4.2.11. He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

1.4.3. Introspection

1.4.3.1. What are the greatest temptations facing you in your life today at school, at home, at work, or wherever you go? What do you need to do to avoid these temptations?

1.4.3.2. Write out your own prayer asking God to keep you away from the things that tempt you to do what isn't right in the sight of God. Ask Him to forgive you for any time when you have given in.

1.4.3.3. Describe a time when God kept you from falling into temptation. What are the reasons you think that resisting temptation is good for your future?

1.4.4. How

1.4.4.1. Jesus stood strong in the Word of God and David forgot about it

1.4.4.1.1. God will not withhold any good thing from His children

1.4.4.1.2. Every good and perfect give comes from above.

1.4.4.1.3. Love is patient

1.4.4.1.4. He will provide my perfect spouse

1.4.4.1.5. It is not good for man to be alone.

1.4.4.1.6. God has given me a spirit of Love, of Power, and of Self-Control.

1.4.4.2. Confess it immediately and ask Him to set you free from it's grasp.

1.4.4.3. If chocolate tempts you, don't hang out in the candy store.

1.4.4.4. Seperate yourself from temptation and ask God to kill that lust in you. He will.

1.4.4.5. Pray about it before it happens

1.4.4.6. Whenever anything tempts you, ask God to give you the strength to resist it. Guard your vulnerable areas with prayer

1.4.4.7. It's best to take it to God and confess it immediately, and then find someone trustworthy to pray with you about it. Don't think temptation will just pass. The pull is too powerful. The risk is too great. Treat it as a serious threat no matter when it happens

1.4.4.8. Ask God to keep you pure and untarnished

1.4.4.9. Make this day a new beginning for you.

1.4.4.10. Start living pure lives if you want to see your prayers answered in the future

1.4.4.11. Because of Jesus in you, you have the power to overcome temptation.

2.6. What is Worship?

2.6.1. When we worship God, His presence comes to dwell with us; and things that need to change, change. Always! You can count on it. Hearts change, situations change, lives change, minds change, marriages change, attitudes change.

2.7. What is Fear?

2.7.1. Anxiety comes from Fear

2.7.2. Fear can come upon us with heart-stopping suddenness

2.7.3. Can distort our thinking

2.7.4. Can control our lives

2.7.5. Can paralyze us

2.8. What is Hope?

2.8.1. Scripture

2.8.1.1. And everyone who has this hope [resting] on Him cleanses (purifies) himself just as He is pure (chaste, undefiled, guiltless).

2.8.1.2. But in your hearts set Christ apart as holy [and acknowledge Him] as Lord. Always be ready to give a logical defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully. (1Peter 3:15)

2.8.1.3. So brace up your minds; be sober (circumspect, morally alert); set your hope wholly and unchangeably on the grace (divine favor) that is coming to you when Jesus Christ (the Messiah) is revealed. (1Peter 1:13)

2.8.1.4. Now... Faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses]. (Hebews 11:1)

2.8.1.5. This was so that, by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God ever to prove false or deceive us, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge might have mighty indwelling strength and strong encouragement to grasp and hold fast the hope appointed for us and set before [us].

2.8.1.6. ...we do [strongly and earnestly] desire for each of you to show the same diligence and sincerity [all the way through] in realizing and enjoying the full assurance and development of [your] hope until the end,

2.8.1.7. And it is we who are [now members] of this house, if we hold fast and firm to the end our joyful and exultant confidence and sense of triumph in our hope [in Christ].

2.8.1.8. [Resting] in the hope of eternal life, [life] which the ever truthful God Who cannot deceive promised before the world or the ages of time began.

2.8.1.9. With a view to this we toil and strive, [yes and] suffer reproach, because we have [fixed our] hope on the living God, Who is the Savior (Preserver, Maintainer, Deliverer) of all men, especially of those who believe (trust in, rely on, and adhere to Him).

2.8.1.10. ...let us be sober and put on the breastplate (corslet) of faith and love and for a helmet the hope of salvation.

2.8.1.11. Recalling unceasingly before our God and Father your work energized by faith and service motivated by love and unwavering hope in [the return of] our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah).

2.8.1.12. Because of the hope [of experiencing what is] laid up (reserved and waiting) for you in heaven. Of this [hope] you heard in the past in the message of the truth of the Gospel,

2.8.1.13. This is in keeping with my own eager desire and persistent expectation and hope, that I shall not disgrace myself nor be put to shame in anything; but that with the utmost freedom of speech and unfailing courage

2.8.1.14. By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones),

2.8.1.15. ...through the [Holy] Spirit's [help], by faith anticipate and wait for the blessing and good for which our righteousness and right standing with God [our conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action, causes us] to hope.

2.8.1.16. But I hope you will recognize and know that we are not disapproved on trial and rejected.

2.8.1.17. Since we have such [glorious] hope (such joyful and confident expectation), we speak very freely and openly and fearlessly.

2.8.1.18. If we who are [abiding] in Christ have hope only in this life and that is all, then we are of all people most miserable and to be pitied.

2.8.1.19. And so faith, hope, love abide [faith--conviction and belief respecting man's relation to God and divine things; hope--joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation; love--true affection for God and man, growing out of God's love for and in us], these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1Corinthians 13:13)

2.8.1.20. May the God of your hope so fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound and be overflowing (bubbling over) with hope. (Romans 15:13)

2.8.1.21. Such hope never disappoints or deludes or shames us, for God's love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us. (Romans 5:5)

2.8.1.22. This is the reason therefore why I have begged to see you and to talk with you, since it is because of the Hope of Israel (the Messiah) that I am bound with this chain. (Acts 28:20)

2.8.1.23. And now I stand here on trial [to be judged on the ground] of the hope of that promise made to our forefathers by God. (Acts 26:6)

2.8.1.24. So that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after Him and find Him, although He is not far from each one of us. (Acts 17:27)

2.9. What is being Contrite?

2.9.1. Sorrowful of non-ability to please God on your own

3. Quotes

3.1. "Study not to be a fine preacher. Jerichos are blown down with rams' horns. Look simply unto Jesus for preaching food; and what is wanted will be given, and what is given will be blessed, whether it be a barley grain or a wheaten loaf, a crust or a crumb. Your mouth will be a flowing stream or a fountain sealed, according as your heart is. Avoid all controversy in preaching, talking, or writing; preach nothing down but the devil, and nothing up but Jesus Christ."

3.2. "One bright benison which private prayer brings down upon the ministry is an indescribable and inimitable something -- an unction from the Holy One... If the anointing which we bear come not from the Lord of hosts, we are deceivers, since only in prayer can we obtain it. Let us continue instant constant fervent in supplication. Let your fleece lie on the thrashing floor of supplication till it is wet with the dew of heaven."

3.3. "Speak for eternity. Above all things, cultivate your own spirit. A word spoken by you when your conscience is clear and your heart full of God's Spirit is worth ten thousand words spoken in unbelief and sin. Remember that God, and not man, must have the glory. If the veil of the world's machinery were lifted off, how much we would find is done in answer to the prayers of God's children."

3.4. "Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on earth. God does nothing but in answer to prayer."

3.5. "If some Christians that have been complaining of their ministers had said and acted less before men and had applied themselves with all their might to cry to God for their ministers -- had, as it were, risen and stormed heaven with their humble, fervent and incessant prayers for them -- they would have been much more in the way of success."

3.6. "This perpetual hurry of business and company ruins me in soul if not in body. More solitude and earlier hours! I suspect I have been allotting habitually too little time to religious exercises, as private devotion and religious meditation, Scripture-reading, etc. Hence I am lean and cold and hard. I had better allot two hours or an hour and a half daily. I have been keeping too late hours, and hence have had but a hurried half hour in a morning to myself. Surely the experience of all good men confirms the proposition that without a due measure of private devotions the soul will grow lean. But all may be done through prayer -- almighty prayer, I am ready to say -- and why not? For that it is almighty is only through the gracious ordination of the God of love and truth. O then, pray, pray, pray!"

3.7. "I judge that my prayer is more than the devil himself; if it were otherwise, Luther would have fared differently long before this. Yet men will not see and acknowledge the great wonders or miracles God works in my behalf. If I should neglect prayer but a single day, I should lose a great deal of the fire of faith."

4. Caveats

4.1. Seeking Him with all your heart

4.1.1. What more can be said, what greater case could be made than this: to find God, you must look with all your heart. To remain present to God, you must remain present to your heart. To hear his voice, you must listen with your heart. To love him, you must love with all your heart. You cannot be the person God meant you to be, and you cannot live the life he meant you to live, unless you live from the heart.

4.4. Characteristics of an Answered Prayer

4.4.1. Answers to prayer don't come by accident, but the way for them is prepared, in part, by a conscious acknowledgement of God's character and words.

4.4.2. The Word of God must be in us, so that God's promises are being personalized and claimed. This is a largely untapped secret to answered prayers.

4.4.3. God has, if you will, a garment at the dry cleaners which is mine, but it must be picked up with a claim check. The claim check? His promises!

5. Inspiring Stories

5.1. “Two men went into the hills above Los Angeles to pray, for they had read Jeremiah 33:3 and wanted to see the promises fulfilled before their eyes. God has said to his faithful prophet in prison, ‘Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know’ (NKJV). How do you stake a claim on the promises of God? The two wanted to know, so they covenanted with each other to pray together every morning until they felt assured that God was going to fulfill that promise in their lives. “Each morning at 5:00 a.m. they were up in the hills, kneeling with open Bibles before them, praying by name for the boys God had given them through their Sunday school and Boy's Club ministry. Each weekday they prayed for two hours, and then headed down again to be at work by 8:00 a.m. On Sundays they prayed for three hours before going to church. “As the days passed they began praying for surrounding cities. In the third week they began extending their prayer interests up the West Coast. As they prayed, they soaked up the promises of God, and He gave them the faith to believe that they could be used to reach men for Christ in all 48 states. As their vision and faith grew, they bought a map of the world, putting their fingers on China, Japan, etc., pleading with God for men in these far off places. ‘Lord allow us to serve you some day in each of these places and enable us to reach men for you in everyone of these continents of the world.’ After 42 days they felt the burden lift, and they began to thank God that He had heard them. “By the time World War II began, Dawson Trotman discovered that in his work with sailors from the Pacific Fleet, men from every one of the 48 states had been touched by his ministry and had visited his home. Jeremiah 33:3 had been partially fulfilled. By the time the war ended four years later, the men he had led to Christ touched other lives on all the continents of the world, including most of the countries for which he had so earnestly prayed. By the time he died 11 years later, Jeremiah 33:3 had been completely fulfilled for him in his ministry. ‘That 42-day prayer meeting,’ he wrote later, ‘was the turning point in my life.’”

5.2. Dawson Trotman had shared with me his vision story of praying 42 days with maps. With no place to preach, I thought, “Why not at least pray to be used of the Lord?” I gathered maps and spread them on the floor. I began this different kind of praying slowly and with hesitation. That I could claim a verse like Jeremiah 33:3 and pray it for a ministry in my city, other cities, states, then to nations! To ask God for ministry around the world at first seemed proud, certainly impossible. I recall Satan's whispers against the “borrowed vision” from Trotman which I felt God leading me to ask. Kneeling before my Bible and the maps, my fingers touched the names of cities and countries. “It is silly,” I thought, “when you can't get a church to hear you preach, and you're asking God to use you around the world?” Yet God encouraged me as I read His Word and warmed to the impossible. He gave me grace to persist. I prayed daily, nearly a month. I felt led to ask for three things: First, that God would use me to win or encourage someone to share Christ in each nation. Second, that God would raise up missionaries to go to each nation and share the Gospel. Third, that missionaries would disciple those won so they, in turn, would win others to Christ. Over the next 12 years I had ministered in Chicago and wrote a six-lesson Gospel of John Correspondence Course. It was for Pacific Garden Mission's “Unshackled” radio program. I'd also pastored two small churches, and won students to Christ at four universities. In the mail I got a letter from P.G. Mission wanting to “update you on the John Bible Study Course you wrote for us.” From 300 stations the response from listeners doing the lessons had resulted in mailed testimonies of salvation from 14,000 people! Listeners receiving Christ lived in 50 states and six foreign countries! I yelled joyfully to the Lord as I read and re-read the letter. But that wasn't the end of the blessing. Since that letter God opened the door for me to teach all new Southern Baptist missionary personnel “the care and feeding of new believers” for 11 years at their Missionary Orientation. Plus for four years I taught their two-year missionaries. The Lord continued to surprise me, never forgetting my prayers from decades ago. He started sending me to teach national pastors and missionaries all over the world. This January I had a special time of praise, speaking in the 100th nation since I claimed the promise: “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things that thou knowest not” (Jeremiah 33:3). God has shown His faithfulness, His staggering love and longsuffering with me. I know He wants to overwhelm you with opportunities, as you believe His Word specifically in prayer. To have an exciting “three score” plus, begin to claim His promises now, while you're young!
