2.1. HBCU'S are more important now than they have ever been. The institutions were created to allow recently emancipated slaves and opportunities to pursue higher education. HBCU'S still remain relevant.

2.1.1. Now today more black colleges do not automatically translate into higher enrollment number's at HBCU'S because the landscape has changed so much since the golden days of the institutions.

3.1. HBCU'S or higher education in the U.S were established before the Civil Right Act Of 1964

3.1.1. HBCU'S were created to meet educational needs of black student's who previously had negligible opportunities to attend college.

4.1. The first HBCU'S conducting classes in people's homes, as well as church basements and old schoolhouses.

4.1.1. The Morill Act Of 1890, which required stataes to provide land-grants for colleges to serve black students. That allowed HBCU'S to build their own campuses

5.1. -HBCU'S are the only institutions in the U.S that were created for the express purpose of educating black citizens

5.1.1. - The very first HBCU was Cheney University Of Pennsylvania (which the original name was the institute for colored people). It is currently the oldest HBCU in the United States
