Hinduism often represents morality (dharma) as an Indian bull. Beginning the Satya Yuga, the bull has 4 legs - but each age reduces this by 1/4. By the age of Kali, dharma is reduced to only that of a 1/4 of that of the age of Satya - shown in the bull only having a single leg remaining.

The belief is that humanity degenerates on a spiritual level during the Kali Yuga. Common attributes and consequences are:

Spiritual bankruptcy
Mindless hedonism
Breakdown of all social structure
Greed
Materialism
Unrestricted egotism
Afflictions and maladies of mind and body

This model is where we see the Kali Yuga as being full of extreme hardships for people with ideals and values.

Satya Yuga

Seen as the \"Golden Age\" - this is the first of the 4 eras, when humanity is governed by gods and every manifestation or work is close to the purest ideal. Humanity will, during this time, allow intrinsic goodness to rule supreme.

Era is stated to last for 1,728,000 years.

Treta Yuga

This era is where mankind grows more materialistic and their power diminishes slightly.

Era is stated to last for 1,296,000 years.

Duapara Yuga

This era is where divine intellect ceases to exist, meaning mankind is seldom truthful. This allows a life of deceit and various plagues to come into their life.

Era is stated to last for 864,000 years.

Kali Yuga

This era is where extreme hardships come fully into being - often, this is associated with \"strife\", \"discord\", \"quarrel\", or \"contention\". It is linked to the demon Kali as well.

Era is stated to last for 432,000 years.
