4. ANCIENT RUINS:With so many empires emerging and disappearing throughout the history of the Indian subcontinent, the ruins of many ancient cities can be visited in India today. Hampi was the capital of a large and powerful empire in the south of the subcontinent; Orchha was the capital of another powerful kingdom in the central part of what is now India. The impressive fortified city of Fatehpur Sikri was the capital of the Mogul Empire for only 14 years, before being abandoned with the death of the legendary emperor Akba

5. BRITISH COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE: Some of the nicest historic centers in India are those that the British built during colonial times. India Gate - Gate of India India Gate Famous British buildings and monuments in India include the Gateway of India and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai, India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi, and Victoria Memorial in Calcutta. The British built several hill stations in the Himalayas to escape the heavy Indian summer. Among the towns in the mountains with a lot of British colonial architecture are Shimla and Darjeeling.

7. TAJ MAHAL:One of the “Seven Wonders of the Modern World”, the Taj Mahal is a mausoleum built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, in the city of Agra. (Note: it is not a temple, and it is not Hindu!) This beautiful building is recognized the world over as a great symbol of love.

ANCIET PALACES AND FORTS: The Indian state of Rajasthan is famous for the Maharajas, or "great kings" - and their ancient palaces and forts attract large numbers of tourists to Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, and other royal cities in the state. The Mogol Empire forts are also impressive - among them the Red Fort, in the old city of Delhi, and the Agra Fort, in the same city as the Taj Mahal. Another impressive fort in northern India is that of Gwalior Fort. Mysore Palace stands out among the palaces of the empires that reigned in southern India.
