1. Rhetoric can be described as "the faculty of discovering the possible means of persuasion in reference to any subject."
1.1. Ethos: refers to how the speaker (who is the most important character in a debate) behaves and speaks, taking into consideration his/her personality and stance.
1.2. Pathos: used to bring emotional appeal to the debate. Imagination and right language choice can convey such thing.
1.3. Logos: correct use of language, reason and argumentation.
2. The use of persuasive strategies in universtities where English is used as a foreign language. (EFL)
2.1. Based on Aristotles rhetoric, the author of the paper provides the reader with background information on rethoric, such as ethos, pathos and logos and explains how they can be used as a means of elaborating a solid debate speech.
2.2. Not only the rhetorical strategies are analysed but also other ones: body language, intonation, gestures and etc.
3. Finnish and Non-Finnish debaters
3.1. What the paper also discussed was the way in which the debaters performed the persuasive strategies using the English language.
3.2. The conclusion achieved was that non-Finnish speakers could make better use of them (strategies), although the Finnish students played a very good role.
4. Finnish debaters' prosody
4.1. One very important factor regarding debating skills is the proper use of intonation, which is included in prosody.
4.2. Intonation is not something commonly used in Finnland, making it harder for the native debaters to do such task in English language.
