Inception by Mind Map: Inception

1. How characters develop and change: Their decisions, what influences them, motivations

1.1. Mallorie Cobb

1.2. Arthur

1.2.1. Arthur is Cobb's right hand man, and apparently closest friend. They have known each other since before the tragic death of Cobb's wife. He lives in America, but travels the world with Cobb. Arthur and Cobb used to work with Eames, but Arthur and Eames appear to dislike each other now. The three never divulge any information about their past experiences together so no further facts can be drawn.

1.3. Ariande

1.3.1. Ariadne is a student of architecture in France. She meets Cobb through one of her teachers, who is Cobb's father-in-law. After a few tests, she is brought into the team as their official Architect. At first she is adverse to dream sharing but can't stay away from the freedom that comes from it. Ariadne discovers all the dark secrets that Cobb is trying to hide and becomes his confidant during the mission. She's almost his shoulder angel, his conscience. Ariadne kisses Arthur during the second stage of the mission, but it was an attempt to throw off the projections, and while it's apparent that Arthur did it on purpose, whether Ariadne has an interest in him is speculative.

2. Characters, firstly, the film can be described as a mass metaphor, representative of the idea of cognitive function, and the natural human desire to seek power. If you take the first letters of the main characters' names - Dom, Robert, Eames, Arthur, Mal and Saito - they spell "Dreams". If you add Peter, Ariadne and Yusuf, the whole makes "Dreams Pay", which is what they do for a mind thief

2.1. The name of the character Cobb references Henry N. Cobb, an American architect notable for designing skyscrapers. The world Cobb and Mal made in Limbo consists mostly of skyscrapers.

2.2. Dom Cobb's main objective is to get Home. His name, Dom, literally means 'home' in most Slavic languages. The root word "*dom" comes from the Latin word "Domus". Words like 'Domesticated' and 'Domicile' all share the same "*dom" root.

2.3. Ariadne is representative of a mythological figure, King Minos’s daughter. King Minos, built the labyrinth of crete to house the minotaur. The idea of Mallorie being a shadow of subconscious, parallels the minotaur. Ariadne offers the minotaur a ball of thread to lead him out of the labyrinth The designer of the labyrinth and architecture within the dreams. She embodies the Ariadne in the myth who alike in the myth, is the architect of an infrastructure that proves to be out of her control.

2.4. A labyrinthine man never seeks the truth, but only his Ariadne. - Nietzsche

2.5. Ariadne is representative of a mythological figure, King Minos’s daughter. King Minos, built the labyrinth of crete to house the minotaur. Ariadne offers the minotaur a ball of thread to lead him out of the labyrinth The designer of the labyrinth and architecture within the dreams. She embodies the Ariadne in the myth who alike in the myth, is the architect of an infrastructure that proves to be out of her control.

2.6. Firstly her name is an important representation of her character. Mallory which is long for 'Mal' which means bad or sad in french, describes her character perfectly. Dominique is the main cause for Mal's deep state of sadness as he originally planted the inception in her. However when she awoke it was permanent and she thought that limbo was her reality and the way to come back was to kill herself. Her character develops throughout the film and although she is perceived as a evil person it's not her fault for the result that she has become. Mal is destroyed by inception.

3. Key Events/Moments that develop the narrative

3.1. When Cobb and Ariadne visit Mal whilst everyone else is in the snow and Cobb explains why Mal killed herself and how he knows that Inception is possible

3.2. The scene where Fischer is faced with his father in a hospital bed when trying to open the safe, this represents the completion of inception.

3.3. In the dream where Cobb and Ariadne visit Mal and the children finally turn around, we are shown confusion as the common theme of their faces not being shown is carried throughout every one of their dreams which indicates that it must be reality.

4. Production Elements in Terms of Characters

4.1. Ariadne- In Ariadne's first dream
