Content-based Instruction (CBI) is the method of teaching about something with language rather than just teaching the language. This method of teaching is not new to the education world, but is recent years it has gained in popularity because of students. Students find learning with CBI to be more exciting and interesting when studying the English language.

There are three types of CBI.

1. Shelthered Model

The goal of this model is to enable students to study the same materials are their native English speaking

classmates. Students are given special assistance in order to help them understanding the context of the regular classes. A homeroom teacher will work with and ESL teacher or an interpreter. Teachers

must work closely together to plan and develop ways to assess the students’ development and understanding.

2. Adjunct Model

Are typically taught by ESL teachers. The goal of this model is to prepare students for regular classes

where they will learn alongside native speakers. Class may conducted in a similar style to EPA or ESP classes (emphasis is on learning a target vocabulary, listening skills, note taking, and skimming and scanning to help the students when placed in a regular classroom).

3. Theme Based Model

Used with EFL studies. Can by taught by an EFL teacher or team taught with a homeroom teacher. The

teacher(s) develop a curriculum that is geared to the students’ interests. Topics can be wide ranging and include anything that engages the student to learn in a foreign language.

ELL English Language Learners
