Autonetnographic “projects seek to contribute to scholarly conversation … they intentionally try to contribute to, extend, and/or critique existing research and theoretical conversations. Some autoethnographers do this by using the language and formatting conventions of traditional social-scientific forms of writing – that is structuring a work using a literature review, research questions, methods, data, and findings format” (Adams, Holman Jones & Ellis, 2015, p36).

In relation to autonetnographic method, it is argued that within TEL where there is limited evidence for the experience of being an online learner/teacher that “the voices from within – the internal political affirmation of cultural diversity and autonomy for sometimes neglected populations and peoples” (Hayano, 1959, p103) can be heard. There is potential for this form of understanding in TEL. Think back to our discussions last year about Communities of Practice - communities are made up of people, people have feelings, emotions, and respond online accordingly. Autonetnography as method can be used to “critique, make contributions to, and/or extend existing research and theory” (Adams, Holman Jones & Ellis, p36) in scholarship in TEL.
