1. The Civil War

1.1. April 12, 1861-May 9, 1865. War between the split United States over slavery. The Confederacy vs the Union. The Confederacy was not ready to give up slavery while the Northern Union states were free.

1.1.1. Abraham Lincoln was the first republican party president to pledge to keep slavery out of his territory. Then 5 of the southern states succeeded.

1.2. Abraham Lincoln was the president of the U.S. Robert E. Lee was the commander of the Confederacy. Ulysses S. Grant was the commander of the Union.

1.2.1. The south lost therefore slavery was abolished. African Americans were free.

1.3. The Homestead Act

1.3.1. An Act that encouraged western migration by providing settlers 160 acres of public land.

1.4. The United States Civil War had the most American casualties in any war in American history.

2.1. The types/Genres of literature that were produced during the civil war are southern books, written by southern gentlemen, printed on southern type, and sold by southern publishing houses.

2.1.1. Some of the major social and political issues during the civil war are Slavery, The Dred Scott decision, States rights, Abolitionist Movement are all major social and political issues of the time.
