1.1. April 12, 1861-May 9, 1865. War between the split United States over slavery. The Confederacy vs the Union. The Confederacy was not ready to give up slavery while the Northern Union states were free.

1.2. Abraham Lincoln was the president of the U.S. Robert E. Lee was the commander of the Confederacy. Ulysses S. Grant was the commander of the Union.

1.2.1. The south lost therefore slavery was abolished. African Americans were free.

2.1. The types/Genres of literature that were produced during the civil war are southern books, written by southern gentlemen, printed on southern type, and sold by southern publishing houses.

2.1.1. Some of the major social and political issues during the civil war are Slavery, The Dred Scott decision, States rights, Abolitionist Movement are all major social and political issues of the time. A few of the major themes in the writing during the civil war include realism, industrialism, and naturalism were all major themes during this time. Spirituals are generally Christian songs that were created by African slaves in the United States.

Realism is an artistic movement that began in France in the 1850s and its revolted against the exotic subject matter, exaggerated emotionalism, and drama of romantic movement Naturalism is ideas or belief that only natural laws and forces operate in the world The local color is a regional literature is fiction and poetry that focuses on the characters, dialect, customs, topography, and other features
