1. SLAVERY

1.1. "Slavery an institutional bondage that has been apart of human history since the beginning"(Stevenson)

1.1.1. Slavery in the old world was not based on race, but on the way one lived.

1.1.1.1. Slavery came from the word Slavic people. The Slavic people were often being captured by the Byzantine empire.

1.1.1.2. The Ancient Greece Judge people on their life style. Discrimination predates as long as the human race, but discrimination based on race is something relatively new.

1.2. Once the Portuguese pushed this false narrative of slavery it began the exportation of West Africa.

1.2.1. The Slave trade the economic system that were used to transport Africans usually fromt he West African ports to the New world and old world.

1.2.2. Africa Provided cheap and proficient labor

1.2.2.1. Many Africans rather killed themselves then becoming slaves. This lead to the Zong Massacre where many Africans took their own lives. And then the sailors decided to kill the rest of the Africans off and collect the insurance. (VVA)

1.2.2.2. In other situations the slaves would join together and take over the ship and sail back to Africa.

1.2.3. The Old World provided weapons and christianity

1.2.4. In the America's they would export cash crops; Tobacco, sweet potatoes, Corn, beans, Coffee, Sugar Cane, etc..

2. RACE

2.1. Gomes Zurara a Portugal man that is said to be the first to articulate racial ideas about West Africa (Podcast)

2.1.1. The Romanus Pontifex: allowed the Portuguese king to capture West Africans. Based on the fact that the West Africans were savages and did not have Christianity. (VVA)

2.1.2. Race In the new world formed as a way for rich elites to maintain power and drive poor whites from associating with the African Slaves and indigenous groups.

2.1.2.1. Lead to the 3 great races; Caucasian, Negroids, and Mongoloids.

2.1.2.2. Created the division between White people and black people, because black slaves were treated harsher then white indentured servants.

2.2. The Portuguese pushed lies about Africa. These lies will become a justification of slavery.(VVA)

3. Law

3.1. Law became a way to solidify the growing racism, and increase the division between white people. As well as isolate Black slaves, and African Americans.

3.1.1. As well as increasing racial tension it created a middle class, and reinforced the position of blacks in society.

3.2. Virginia Slave laws

3.2.1. These laws focused on converting Slaves to Christianity

3.2.2. The process of naturalization for the first born African children in America. How children of Slaves were not free.

3.2.3. Rich men prospered and encouraged many wealthy elite to increase the racial tension between whites, granting opportunity for poor whites, that black slaves could never have.

3.3. Both of these laws and many more, promoted racism. In order to maintain the position of wealth and enforce the power dynamic that the elite needed to maintain control.

3.4. Colonial Laws

3.4.1. Virginia, 1682 Forced Christianity on slaves/servants

3.4.2. These laws were established limit the right of African slave, any servant and indigenous groups. Forbidding the relationship between anyone with a slave.
