W05 Vocabulary and Readings

1. School Councilor

1.1. Work with ALL students including special education students. Known as the problem solvers of the school.

1.2. They can address personal problems, resolves issue with peer relationships, assess students with disabilities by making sure they are in appropriate classes, helping students finding a college to go to or a job, etc.

2. School Social Worker

2.1. Ensures that the students are receiving all the supports that they need.

2.2. They coordinate the efforts of educators, families, and outside agency personal.

2.3. They contact the family if there seems to be a reoccurring problem.

2.4. Help families in need get the materials that they need.

2.5. Works with ALL students.

3. Occupational Therapist

3.1. Helps students to gain independence both in the school and community by teaching fundamental and living skills.

3.2. Assisting in developing problem solving and decision making skills.

3.3. They determine if the student needs adaptive equipment and instruct the students on how to use that equipment.

4. Physical Therapist

4.1. Provides services for the students whose disabilities effects their bodies ability to move.

4.2. Deals with students muscle strength, flexibility, mobility, posture, positioning, balance and coordination. Help to decide on some equipment such as wheelchairs.

5. Special Education Teachers

5.1. A professional who provides day-to-day instruction and other supports for students with disabilities.

5.2. Professionals who provide special education services to the students that need it.

5.3. An educator who works alongside the students parents and other professionals with the goal of helping the special education student achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

6. Speech-Language Pathologist

6.1. A professional who diagnoses, designs interventions, delivers services, and monitors the progress of students with special needs related to speech and language.

6.2. They can also help students to develop communication skills or help them with eating, drinking, and swallowing.

7. School Psychologist

7.1. Professionals that are licensed to administer different tests to help determine if the student is eligible to receive special education services.

7.2. They are then responsible for communicating the results to the parents of the student.

7.3. Experts at understanding the students social and emotional needs.

7.4. Work with the family and other professionals to design interventions

8. Paraeducator

8.1. AKA paraprofessionals or teacher assistant.

8.2. They work under the direction of the teacher to help deliver the services to the student with a disability.

8.3. They have a wide range of roles and responsibilities, but they mainly just help the teacher with whatever they need help on.

9. IEP Goals

9.1. 5 Components: Specify the condition, state the target skill or behavior, determine the criteria, specify the procedure, specify the schedule.

9.2. SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound
