1. Students can't list multiple pronouns
1.1. Problem
1.1.1. Neo pronouns aren't included
1.1.2. Currently no ability to be able have someone that has multiple subject/object/possessive
1.2. 🛑 Roadblock
1.2.1. Limited ability to make changes in SOLAR due to the way the data/back-end is handled.
1.2.1.1. The CSU Chancellor's office is responsible for the current interface and database design
1.2.1.1.1. Currently, the way pronouns are handled in database, when student updates their pronoun, the old pronoun entry is overridden. To change the way this data is structured and handled will have to be on a database/back-end level.
1.2.1.1.2. CSUN can make changes to the system in SOLAR, but the Chancellor's office ultimately has control over the database structure and CSUN modifications can be overridden by their updates.
1.2.1.2. Pronoun handling needs to be compatible to connect with different systems, such as Canvas. Canvas has a technical limitation where it does not support multiple pronouns.
2. Dead names on student email addresses (first.last@my.csun.edu)
2.1. Solution
2.1.1. Students can request email changes from the help center
2.2. Action Needed
2.2.1. ☑️ Investigate for a long-term scalable solution by reaching out to Ryan Conlogue and Nick Alexander
3. Faculty don't know how to approach a student having two names
3.1. Problem
3.1.1. Professors requiring that your name to match your roster name
3.2. Solution
3.2.1. Limit visibility for dead names when there doesn't need to be
3.2.1.1. ℹ️ New information: Canvas populates preferred name. The roster also shows preferred name, so if the student uses that functionality, there should be no mismatch.
4. Students having preferred names on student ID
4.1. Problem
4.1.1. Student IDs still print out legal names
4.1.1.1. Some departments (such as the Testing office) require Student IDs to match government issued IDs
4.2. Opportunity to influence future policy
4.2.1. One Card platform is in beginning stages
4.2.1.1. Policies about the student IDs will be under review and re-consideration.
4.2.1.1.1. ❗️Ultimate decision will need to be approved by Cabinet before implementation.
4.2.1.2. David Dufault-Hunter is the head of this project and would be a good person for the committee to reach out to
4.2.1.2.1. ☑️ Committee can request that David Dufault-Hunter ensures preferred name is the default with data extracts
5. Students getting physical mail in their dead names
5.1. Problem
5.1.1. Each department is in charge of distributing physical mail. There is a lack of communication and guidelines with how the departments handle student data. For example, some student data extracts may be outdated or departments may neglect to request the preferred name field when requesting an extract.
5.2. Solution
5.2.1. Departments need to adhere to communication guidelines and practices that prioritize student preferred names.
5.3. Action Needed
5.3.1. ☑️ Reach out to Enrollment Services Strategic Communications (formerly Student Marketing and Communications) although the physical mail they handle is primarily admissions packets- they are generally really dialed in on broader campus communications.
6. Students seeing dead names on autofill in email clients
6.1. Problem
6.1.1. Email can come from anywhere on campus. At some point, the data source was probably PeopleSoft.
6.2. Action Needed
6.2.1. ☑️ Reach out to Dr. Watkins to ask about how and where student email data is handled
