7. Senator McCarthy accused thousands of Americans of being communists or communist sympathizers and became the subject of aggressive investigations and questioning. He encouraged the American people to join in on the hunt to find communist spies. The term McCarthyism was started during this time which was the practice of making wrongful accusations without the proper evidence.
