What is technology (1) 저자: Mind Map: What is technology (1)

1. What I think now

1.1. "By technologies progress I mean any change in the application of information to the production in such a way as to increase efficiency, resulting either in the production of a given output with fewer resources (i.e., lower costs), or the production of better or new products."(Mokyr: 1990)

1.1.1. I realized as we are getting more and more advanced the prices drop and the products get better. The first invention in that field is much more important. There are many things that people who existed over a century ago could not even have thought would exist.

1.1.1.1. Technology are things created by humnas humnas that can make our life easier or solve problems. For example: from using water directly from ponds we developed a method to bring it to our home i.e. indoor plumbing.

1.2. “Technologies are best seen as systems that combine technique and activities with implements and artifacts, within a social context of organization in which the technologies are developed, employed, and administered. They alter patterns of human activity and institutions by making worlds that shape our culture and our environment. If technology consists of not only tools, implements, and artifacts, but also whole networks of social relations that structure, limit, and enable social life, then we can say that a circle exists between humanity and technology, each shaping and affecting the other. Technologies are fashioned to reflect and extend human interests, activities, and social arrangements, which are, in turn, conditioned, structured, and transformed by technological systems.” (Kaplan: 2003)

1.2.1. This made me understand that human activity is impacted a lot and we are constanly shaping our world and environment. There is a circle of technology and human shaping each other. We are getting advanced. For instance, light bulb was the reason today ACs, refrigerators, heaters and lamps exist.

1.2.1.1. It could be as simple as inventing wheel originally created by rotating axes into solid discs of wood. Invention of wheel is considered greatest of all time. The development of the wheel facilitated faster and simpler human transportation while also substantially altering primitive humans' way of life. They could also save a lot of time on transportation and use it for other productive tasks.

1.3. As mentioned by Hughes "Technology is messy and complex. It is difficult to define and to understand. In its variety, people in the industrialized world reduce technology's complexity, ignore its contradictions, and handmaiden of commercial capitalism and the military. Too often, technology is narrowly equated with computers and the Internet" (Hughes: 2004)

1.3.1. Truthfully, although I had not previously considered it in this manner, technology permeates every aspect of our daily lives. We would struggle to survive without it. It was initially developed as a means of survival. We had fire so we could cook food. We used tools to construct shelters so that we could shield ourselves from the elements. We gained knowledge on how to construct a shelter using tree branches and stones for our own. In order to determine whether the water is safe to drink, we learned how to do it. If not, we can still use it for something else. We created clothing to shield our bodies. Since then, we have been developing new technologies and enhancing existing ones.

1.3.1.1. An example of evoultion of technology. The pen is the first technologies that made easier for humans to record and reference to previous thought and actions. Later, printing press was developed this device makes it easier to mass produce written word allowing broader access to information. We use technology in everyday.

1.4. I agree with Isman when he says "Human’s use of technology involves not only machines (e.g., computer hardware) and instruments, but also includes structured relations with other humans, machines, and the environment. In short, technology is more than a collection of machines and devices. To go beyond simplistic intuitions about technology requires investigation of the human mind and socio-cultural environment as well as interactions with technological artifacts" (Isman, 2012, 208)

1.4.1. This made me understand that, despite the fact that technology can take on many various shapes, they all serve some sort of functional purpose for people. This might be for anything from home appliances to weaponry.

1.4.1.1. For instance, the moving apple commercial in this section demonstrated how technology might fundamentally serve as a structured facilitator of interpersonal connection. In this way, interpersonal relationships and connections are part of technology. Relations with the environment are also a possible component. Using solar and wind energy with respect to our globe, for instance.

2. How my idea of technology has changed

2.1. Technology is essential for our survival. How we came from pen to printing press is phenomenonal.

2.2. Technology will keep on evolving. It has developed from keypad phones to smart phones. It will keep on getting advanced day by day.

2.3. Technology is not limited to computers and phones

2.3.1. Pens & Pencils - "..made it easier to record and reference to previous thoughts and actions" (Tuck,2019)

2.3.2. Umbrellas - ". help us to keep us dry in the rain" (Powtoon, 2019)

2.3.3. Utensils - "helps us to eat food" (Powtoon, 2019)

2.3.4. Stoves and ovens made it easier to cook food inside the house.

2.3.5. Refrigerators to keep food cold. So that food can stay fresh longer.

2.3.6. Microwaves are used for their heating application and can be used to cook food as well.

2.3.7. Vaccum cleaners to get rid of dust and clean the floor for saving time and energy.

2.4. Technology serve common purpose fo making our life easier and satisfy our needs.

3. What I used to think before

3.1. Basic tools that are developed to make our life easier.

3.2. Putting scientific knowledge to use in practical ways. Manipulation of the human environment.

3.3. Communication

3.3.1. Television - entertainment, news, culture, music and sports.

3.3.2. Internet - research, downloading files, sharing of files, entertainment, sharing of information across the globe.

3.3.3. Cell phones - web surfing, communication purposes, social media, music, GPS and connects us to the whole world.

3.4. Electrical

3.4.1. Computers - facilitating quick learning and making research easier

3.4.2. Artificial Intelligence - enhances how machines respond to commands.

3.5. Transportation

3.5.1. GPS - tracks the user's location across the globe.

3.5.2. Flights- facilitates international travel

3.5.3. Train - enables quick, affordable movement between cities and within cities

3.5.4. Cars - convenient and fast

4. Why do we need new technology

4.1. It improves work and make the world better.

4.2. to ensure that our society advances naturally and that we build on the technologies created by our forebears in order to avoid stagnation.

4.3. Ensuring we are getting advanced by getting through daily activities quicker.

4.4. to advance as a society.

4.5. should always work on bettering how we conduct ourselves, both individually and collectively.

4.6. for improving quality of life.
