A Few Types of Poetry

1. Acrostic

1.1. Topic idea runs down left side of the poem

1.2. Each letter in the topic is the starting point for that line of poetry

1.3. Topic is usually the title

2. Concrete

2.1. Often in a shape

2.1.1. A poem about a dog can be shaped like a dog

2.2. Poems where the words are arranged to convey meaning

3. Lyrical

3.1. Emphasizes mood and emotions

3.2. Often accompanies music

3.2.1. Any song you listen to is lyrical poetry

4. Haiku

4.1. First line has 5 syllables, second line has 7 syllables, and the third line has 5 syllables

4.2. Are often about nature (but not always

4.3. Originated in Japan

5. Free Verse

5.1. Can be written about anything

5.2. Does not have to rhyme or have rhythm

5.3. No rules
