1. Advantages and disadvantages of using this method

1.1. Advantages: 1. It makes the learning of English interesting and lively. 2. It is an activity method facilitating the alertness and participation of the students. 3. Students can understand what they learn, think about it, and then express their ideas about what they read. 4. Fluency of speech, good pronunciation, and power of expression are properly developed.

1.2. Disadvantages: 1. This method is based on the principles that auditory appeal is stronger than visual. But some children learn more with visual than with their oral-aural sense like ears and tongue. 2. Sufficient attention is not paid to reading and writing. 3. This method may not hold well in higher classes where the Translation Method is found suitable. 4. This method does not satisfy the needs of individual students in large classes.

2. Roles of teachers and students

2.1. Teacher roles: Provide your students a stress-free and supportive environment, present new items through the use of questions and demonstrations, to monitor students’ production for accuracy, to avoid the use of the mother tongue.

2.2. Student roles: listen and repeat, ask and answer questions, ask if there are doubts.

3. Origins and characteristics

3.1. This method emerged in the 1890s as a response to the Grammar-Translation method. In this method all teaching is done in the target language, grammar is taught inductively, there is a focus on speaking and listening, and only useful ‘everyday' language is taught.

4. The principles of this method are;

4.1. 1. Language is the first and foremost speech.

4.2. 2. Objects or pictures should be used to help students.

4.3. 3. No L1 language is used.

5. Common activities in this method

5.1. Common classroom activities in this method are drills and repetition activities, question and answer activities, listening activities, and oral exercises and tasks.
