What is Technology? создатель Mind Map: What is Technology?

1. What I thought about technology prior to the module

1.1. Devices

1.1.1. Cellphones, computers, online games, ipod, walki-talki, landline,

1.2. Social Media platforms

1.2.1. The ability to talk to people around the world and visually see them via social media profiles or facetime, Youtube, Snapchat, Instagram

1.3. Small inventions/electronics

1.3.1. Robots, interactive games, Xbox and video games, PS3, Tamagotchi, Televison, self cleaining robots (Romba)

1.4. Big Inventions/ Tools

1.4.1. Cars/ Electric Car (Tesla)

1.4.2. Industrial machinery and equipment

1.4.2.1. Snow plow, Tractors and other farming equipment, construction tools,

1.4.3. Trains, airplanes, buses, subways, cars, motorcycle

1.5. AI

1.5.1. Siri, Alexa, Translation programming, google home

2. What I learned from the module about technology!

2.1. "When people think of technology, they tend to think of human artifacts, such as machines, electronic devices, scientific hardware, or other manufacturing systems. However, A formal definition of technology indicates that it has a more general meaning which includes any "practical application of knowledge"or "manner of accomplishing a task"..(Isman 2012)

2.1.1. This is an interesting definition of technology because it includes the accomplishment of a task and application of knowledge as technology. This goes beyond just a physcial definition like an ipad or a pen. Does this mean language or math could be a from of technology?

2.1.1.1. "Technology in the form of routines, methods, and skills used to make modern hardware..."(Dyer, 2009) Dyer goes on to include techniques, like a recipe or a Bible study, as a part of technology. (Dyer, 2009)

2.2. In the Youtube video from the module "What is Technology," it describes technology as, "Things made by humans to solve problems and make things easier". (Nusys, 2010)

2.2.1. What I understood from this defintion is that technology is generally an invention that is intended to create convience for us. In the video "What is Technology" from the module, it explains that technology does not always have a wire or electrical connection. We can look at an umbrella or a lock as a technology. (Nusys, 2019)

2.3. Kevin Kelly describes technology as an extension of life.(Kelly 2010) Kelly notes that we have been effecting and transforming our world with small amounts of technology since the very beginning. Kevin Kelly states,"technology is the most powerful force unleashed on this planet".(Kelly 2010) Kelly explains that have humans were able to eliminate approximately 250 megafuana animals into extinction with just the use of stone tools. (Kelly, 2010) Kevin Kelly believes that technology is the most powerful force unleashed on this planet. For example Kelly mentions fire as being one of the first technologies to effect the climate and agriculture. (Kelly 2010)

2.3.1. Law

2.3.1.1. Kelly defines us as a society, as technology. We have created ourselves in the way we create cities and organize law. (Kelly,2010)

2.3.2. Fire

2.3.2.1. It makes perfect sense that fire was the first technology. Kelly describes it as the first technology known to humans. It changed forever the way humans cook. Cooking with fire created an external stomach for humans. According to Kelly, we would not be able to live without fire because our bodies have adapted and become reliant to this way of cooking.(Kelly, 2010)

2.3.3. Stone tools

2.3.3.1. A technology that wiped out 250 animals 10,000 years ago (Kelly, 2010) If humanity can do something astronomical like this with such a small amount of technology it shows how capable humans are of creating and changing this world for better or worse.

2.4. The sociotechnical system is described in an article by John Dyer entitled "Defining the Word Technology Four Times". Dyer expresses, "The idea that you may comment and I may reply is considered social processes built on top of hardware and intimately connected to the hardware." (Dyer, 2009)

2.4.1. How closely intertwined we are with technology. Hardware is designed to understand how to get a result. It understands our social roles and structures and our interactions.

3. Do we need new technology?

3.1. We will always need solutions to problems

3.1.1. Kelly believes that Humanity and Technology are interlinked so closely that we have invented ourselves. We continue and will continue to invent ourselves. (Kelly, 2010)

3.2. Technology provides convience

3.2.1. As technology advances and we get accustomed to its convience and easy alternatives

3.3. Necessary for humans to continue living

3.4. We need to continue to create new technology. As Kevin Kelly had mentioned in his Ted Talk, even if we find the technology we created is not useful for one thing, it will have another use. So we can never stop creating technology because it will always have a job somewhere. (Kelly, 2010)

4. How I view technology now

4.1. Is technology good or bad? I believe that it is both necessary for humanity to continue to grow but it must be handled carefully.

4.1.1. Technology can be used negetively as weapons and destruction

4.1.2. Consumes so much of our daily time ie, education, transportation, communicaton, work, entertainment

4.2. Technology is more than just electronics.

4.2.1. A pen is technology! The pen was one of the first technologies that made recording thoughts easy. (Tuck, 2019)

4.2.1.1. Technology is machinery, gadgets, tools, know how, toys, recipe, society, law, umbrella, lock, phone, social media, a solution to a problem.

4.3. It is apart of everything

4.3.1. Embeded in our lives and we are very reliant on the things that we have created.
