1. HOW CHARACTERS DEVELOP AND CHANGE: THEIR DECISIONS, WHAT INFLUENCES THEM, MOTIVATION
1.1. learn to look after themselves
1.1.1. Jamal and Salim's mother dies and they are forced the develop and change by having to learn to look after themselves
1.1.1.1. Motivations: Want to keep each other safe, and soon after they meet Latika, Jamal is motivated by the thought of meeting up with her again one day
1.1.1.2. Production techniques such as the the happy music show us that they are determined to not let the death of their mother make them sad and will try their hardest to succeed
1.2. Salim turns against his brother
1.2.1. After the children are taken in by the evil people who are using the children to earn money, Salim starts to boss his brother, Latika and the other children around. This is the first we see of the mean and betrayal side of Salim
1.2.1.1. Production techniques: Everything else is quiet as we can just hear Salim coming and yelling at Latika and Jamal, and all the children run off scared. We can see the children looking at Salim in shock, as camera angles come close up on Latika and Jamal's faces as they are being yelled at by Salim
1.2.2. We can se Salim betraying Jamal again when he lets go of Latika's hand after they jump on the train
1.2.2.1. Production techniques: It is very dark as they get separated, reflecting the mood of what has just happened. The camera shot moves forward with the train, showing a vulnerable little Latika standing scared and alone on the train lane, moving further and further away from the boys
1.3. Trust is broken between the brothers
1.3.1. Through all the times that Salim betrays Jamal, he always seems to turn back and Jamal forgives him - however there is one key event we see that really turns Jamal against Salim, and the trust is broken forever. This is when he steals Latika from Jamal and sends Jamal away, as he has agreed to work for the mob boss. The brothers do not see each other again until they are much older
1.3.1.1. Production techniques: As this event unfolds, the camera is shot from behind Jamal so we can see the events unfolding the same way Jamal would. We are facing the door fighting for Latika with Jamal, when the door is abruptly slammed shut in Jamal's face. It is very loud while the brothers are fighting, and very shaky and camera shots from many different angles, which reflects the confusion of what is going on
1.4. Salim redeems himself and saves Latika, knowing that it will result in his own death
1.4.1. Salim can reflect back and knows that he has been a horrible person - he frees Latika to go and look after his brother, as he knows how happy this will make his brother.
1.4.1.1. Production techniques: The bathroom which Salim locks himself in is very dark and looks cold - this reflects the mood. The music is suspenseful which makes us get glued to the movie, hoping that Latika is okay and wondering what will happen to Salim when the mob boss finds out what he has done
1.5. We see Jamal become finally happy, the first time we see him truly smile since he was a little boy
1.5.1. Jamal hears that Latika is okay on the phone, and no longer cares if he gets the answer wrong - he picks any answer, but he looks finally relieved and happy. He does not mind if he does not win the show because as he knows that Latika is okay, so he feels like he has already won.
1.5.1.1. Production techniques: We are flashed with pictures of both Latika and Jamal, both looking so happy and smiling, with obviously neither thinking of the game show anymore, but only thinking of each other
2. RELATIONSHIPS THAT DEVELOP BETWEEN CHARACTERS
2.1. Jamal and Latika
2.1.1. They find each other eventually and fall in love.
2.1.1.1. Production techniques used: They used happy and emotional music to create a nice atmosphere at the end and cause the audience to know that they are in love and have a good relationship.
2.2. Jamal and Salim
2.2.1. Salim betrays Jamal but consequently did the right thing by the end in order for Jamal and Latika to be together.
2.2.1.1. Production techniques: The lighting and music, when Salim forces Jamal to leave is dark and intense. These features were used to create meaning and show to the audience how Jamal felt after it and was lost without his brother. Items such as Salim having the gun in his hand shows his authority and power out of the three children. The camera angles just showing Jamal from a distance standing at the door alone shows how he is isolated and lost without Jamal and Latika.
2.3. Host and Jamal
2.3.1. The relationship between Jamal and the host is unassuming in that the host comes across as nice but tricks Jamal into choosing the wrong answer.
2.3.1.1. The music is in the foreground, making the audience very engaged and nervous. The camera angles are used with a sweeping camera to show the circular room and makes Jamal and the host the centre of the scene, emphasising their significance.
2.4. Mother and Jamal + Salim
2.5. Jamal and The blind boy
2.5.1. Jamal comes back looking for Latika and sees the boy that had been blinded by Laman an he is begging for money by singing. Jamal can relate to how he is feeling as he only just escaped from his kind of life.
2.5.1.1. The close up camera angles and dark lighting show how poor the boy is and how desparate he is. His clothing is old and torn and the dark scene of the tunnel emphasise his poverty
2.6. Latika and Salim
2.6.1. Their relationship is very one sided, and although there aren't many scenes with only the two of them Latika is clearly intimidated by Salim. He influences her significantly especially when they turned on Jamal.
2.6.1.1. When Salim says to Latika to go and fin Jamal she is apprehensive and does't want to get in trouble. The lighting is dark and the camera angles are close up so you can see the fear in Latika's face, without using dialogue to show the two of them talking. This dark lighting is also used in the scene where Latika and Salim leave Jamal at the hotel.
3. Key Events/moments that develop the narrative
3.1. Muslims invade his village and kill his mother.
3.1.1. The children are then seperated from their mother- orphans, they have to look after themselves
3.1.1.1. The panic is evident by the moving camera shots and then the slow motion clips as we see a close up on Jamal's face as he is told to run
3.1.2. It shows the strong divide between culture and the inhumane things that went on
3.2. The boys live on the street making money where they can and taking any opportunity to do so
3.2.1. They learn to look after themselves and Jamal's older brother is the established leader
3.2.1.1. We see this when he is the one with the loudest voice who is always ordering jamal and making the decisions.
3.3. Laman approaches them and with the promise of food and shelter in exchange for their singing and they take this opportunity.
3.3.1. Shows that adults have great influence on the innocent children and that they are desperate for food and safety.
3.4. We first meet Latika and the bond between Jamal and her grows as they play pranks on his brother. They call themselves the 'three Musketeers.'
3.4.1. This makes leaving her behind extra sad and the divide between the brothers starts to develop
3.5. The brothers train surf and eventually get kicked off at New Dehli
3.5.1. The boys learn that foreigners have lots of money and they learn how to get it. By taking them on tours, stealing shoes and taking pictures of them.
3.5.1.1. After rolling down the hill the characters switch to an older version so that we see time has gone by.
3.5.1.2. There is boppy music in the back ground which shows that this was quite a hpayy time for the boys.
3.5.1.3. The camera angles when we first see Taj Mahal show it as being grand and majestic and like a heaven
3.5.1.4. The short clips of footage show the different activities that the boy's get up to
3.6. Jamal does not give up on the dream of finding Latika and convinces Salim to go looking for her
3.6.1. Shows that even though they have been through a lot Jamal is still able to feel love
3.6.2. They find her 'dancing' and try to take her away
3.6.2.1. This is when Salim pulls out a gun for the first time and his future begins to dictate itself. He shoots Laman.
3.6.2.2. Shows that Laman just exploits the children and that young people are sold into prostitution
3.6.2.3. They succeed and run away
3.7. They sneak into a hotel room and Jamal starts to drink. Jamal and Latika are firendly
3.7.1. It could be the shooting earlier that day or the power that he feels after looking after Jamal or the need to be in control or the alcohol inside him but Salim gets hired to work for a gang.
