The Structure of the Ear создатель Mind Map: The Structure of the Ear

1. Outer Ear

1.1. The pinna

1.1.1. The pinna funnels sound in

1.1.2. It is shaped in order to concentrate sound waves and cause them to travel and transport energy to the eardrum

1.2. The eardrum

1.2.1. This seperates the outer from the middle ear

1.2.2. It is a membrane that vibrates, allowing the vibrations to reach the ossicles

2. Middle Ear

2.1. The ossicles

2.1.1. The ossicles are the smallest bones in the human body

2.1.2. As they are solids, vibrations travel fastest through them

2.1.3. They amplify the pressure by compressing the vibrations into a small area

3. Inner Ear

3.1. Inner Ear Fluid

3.1.1. A fluid contained within the cochlea, through which vibrations occur faster than through air

3.1.2. Needs amplified sound in order to vibrate, hence the ossicle

3.2. Cochlea

3.2.1. Shell-shaped structure in which the inner ear fluid is

3.2.2. Turns vibrations into electrical data capable of reaching the nervous system

3.3. Cochlear Nerve

3.3.1. Part of the nervous system

3.3.2. Responsible for the brain recieving data about sound

3.3.3. Also called the acoustic nerve or the vestibulocochlear nerve
