Methodology in Guidance and Counseling

1. Definition: Methodology refers to the various ways to teach a lesson. The more common methods of classroom instruction include: lecture, discussion, and problem-based instruction (Ebert II, Ebert, & Bentley, 2011). In addition to the concepts taught, an educator should also consider where the lesson will take place and the developmental level of the students when determining the best method of instructional delivery (Ebert II, Ebert, & Bentley, 2011).

2. Example: A small group of students need help with stress management. A six-week group counseling session is an effective counseling method. This method allows the students, in a low-risk environment, the opportunity to learn about one stress management technique per week, the time to apply it in their own lives, and the ability to reflect on the outcomes before learning a new strategy.

3. Application: One method used in a school setting is group counseling. During a group counseling session, a small group of students work together on activities and shared concepts (ASCA, 2014). Bibliotherapy is an effective activity in a group counseling session where students read and discuss a book as a means to guide them through identified topics ("Bibliotherapy: How Books Can Treat," 2012).
