Metaphor 作者: Mind Map: Metaphor

1. Metaphorical Concept

1.1. The metaphorical system is systematic, for instance the language we use to talk about that aspect of the concept is also systematic.

1.1.1. "Time is Money", this example forms a single system based on subcategorization, since in our society money is a limited resource an for instance a value commodity

2. Metaphorical Systematicity

2.1. In order to comprehend one aspect of a concept in terms of another we will necessarily hide other aspects of the concept.

2.1.1. It can keep us from focusing on other aspect of the concept that are inconsistent with a metaphor.

2.1.2. For example: the conduit metaphor which states that: The speaker puts ideas (objects) into words (containers) and sends them (along a conduit) to a hearer who takes the idea/object out of the word/container.

3. Orientational Metaphors

3.1. They organize a whole system of concepts with respect to one another.

3.2. Most of the have to do with spatial orientation: Up-down, in-out,etc.

3.2.1. They are rooted in physical and cultural experience. They are not randomly assigned.

4. Experiential Metaphors

4.1. "More is up"

4.1.1. This example has a different kind of experiential basis than "happy is up". Though the concept up is the same in all metaphors, the experiences on which these "up" metaphors are based are very different.

5. Ontological Metaphors

5.1. Once we can identify our experiences as entities or substances, we can refer to them, categorize them, group them and quantify them and, by this, reason about them.

5.1.1. They serve a very limited range of purposes: Referring and quantifying.

5.2. "Ways of viewing events, activities, emotions, ideas, etc… As entities and substances.

5.2.1. We use them to comprehend events, actions, activities and states.

6. Container Metaphors

6.1. "Each of us is a container, with a bounding surface and an in-out orientation"

6.2. For example "Activities"

6.2.1. In general, they are viewed as substances an therefore as containers for actions and other activities.

7. Idea Conceived

7.1. It is a device of the poetic imagination and the rhetorical flourish, a matter of extraordinary rather than ordinary language. Also, it is pervasive every day, not just in language but in thought and actions.

7.1.1. Metaphor as linguistic expressions are possible precisely because there are metaphors in a person´s conceptual system

8. Concepts / Conceptual System

8.1. They structure what we perceive, how we get around and how we relate to others.

8.1.1. Example: "Argument is War"

8.1.2. Many things we do in arguing are partially structured by the concept of war. Thought there is no physical battle, so it refers to how it structures the actions we perform in arguing.

9. Cultural Coherence

9.1. This most fundamental values in a culture will be coherent with the metaphorical structure of the most fundamental concepts in the culture.

9.2. These values are deeply embedded in our culture and the vary from culture to culture.
