2. Summative
2.1. Definition: An high-stakes assessment given at the end of an instructional unit to evaluate student learning compared to a benchmark.
2.1.1. Example 1: A mid-term exam that assesses a student's knowledge over a semester worth of material.
2.1.2. Example 2: A final project or portfolio students use to express the knowledge and understanding they have learned throughout a semester of year.
3. Performance
3.1. Definition: An assessment that measures how students applied their knowledge and skills through producing something to be graded by specific criteria.
3.1.1. Example 1: Writing an essay that allows the student to apply the skills and knowledge they have learned to use.
3.1.2. Example 2: An exhibition which allows the student to publicly display what they have learned through performing skills.
4. Diagnostic
4.1. Definition: An assessment that is given at the beginning of a unit to collect data on what the students already know or do not know before learning content.
4.1.1. Example 1: A pre-test or low-stakes questionnaire to help the teacher learn what the student knows.
4.1.2. Example 2: A KWL chart allows the students to write sentences about what they already know about a topic. (Click arrow to go to image URL)
5. Formative
5.1. Definition: An ungraded assessment used during the learning process that provides feedback for the teacher to identify gaps, misunderstandings before giving a summative assessment.
5.1.1. Example 1: Exit ticket or practice quiz to give the students for the purpose of capturing their understanding during the learning process and before a summative assessment.
5.1.2. Example 2:This assessment is dialogued based therefore a good example would be informal questions for the teacher to gage understanding.
6. Interim/Benchmark
6.1. Definition: An assessment administered to students periodically to evaluate where student are in learning progress and determine if they will perform well in the future.
6.1.1. Example 1: Standardized tests taken at the end of the year to check if student are on level, falling behind, or excelling in various subjects. (STARR)
6.1.2. Example 2: District 6 weeks assessments are taken every six weeks to evaluate student progress and improvement.
