Crane 作者: Mind Map: Crane

1. Function

1.1. What is the function of the crane?

1.1.1. lift up heavy items that humans can't

1.1.2. help with construction

2. Forces:

2.1. Internal Forces:

2.1.1. Compression

2.1.1.1. What structural component helps a structure withstand compression?

2.1.1.1.1. A structural component in my crane that helps with compression is an arch because the arch sends the weight of the force to the two stands that end on the ground

2.1.2. Tension:

2.1.2.1. What structural components help a structure withstand tension

2.1.2.1.1. A structural component in my crane that helps with tension is a column, because it is solid all the way.

2.1.3. Gravity: Gravity keeps the crane firmly planted on the platform

2.1.4. Torsion:

2.1.4.1. What structural components help a structure withstand torsion?

2.1.4.1.1. A structural component in my crane that helps with torsion is a filled out box beam, because since it's solid throughout, it's harder to bend.

2.1.5. Shear:

2.1.5.1. What structural components helps a structure withstand shear?

2.1.5.1.1. A structural component in my crane that helps with shear is a beam, because it's already flat, you can't really squish it anymore

2.2. External Forces:

2.2.1. Magnitude

2.2.1.1. What is the magnitude of the crane?

2.2.1.1.1. Hard

2.2.2. Point of Application

2.2.2.1. What is the point of application?

2.2.2.1.1. The point of application is to the left and right

2.2.3. Plane of Application

2.2.3.1. If the load was lifted up by the crane, what would the plane of application be?

2.2.3.1.1. a 45 degree angle

2.2.3.2. If something were to land on the crane, what would the plane of application be?

2.2.3.2.1. a 180 degree angle

2.2.4. Direction of force

2.2.4.1. What is the direction of the force?

2.2.4.1.1. The direction of the force is left or right depending on the dynamic load. It may also come from the top if something lands on the top.

3. Form

3.1. Will my structure be a solid, frame, shell or combination structure?

3.1.1. It will be a combination structure. What is it made out of?

3.1.1.1. cardboard

3.1.1.2. tape

3.1.1.3. Popsicle sticks

3.1.1.4. string

3.1.1.5. Clay

3.2. What will my structure look like?

3.2.1. It looks like an I-beam and that slopes together like a triangle like thing with a box at the bottom. Inside the box is an X, like a truss and another tiny rectangle on the top. Then there are struts and ties everywhere.

4. Stability

4.1. Where is the center of gravity?

4.1.1. The center, near the bottum

4.1.1.1. Why is it there?

4.1.1.1.1. Because we have a wide base and a smaller top, bringing more weight closer to the bottom. It is in the middle because it is symmetrical, each side bearing the same weight.

4.2. What makes my strucutre stable?

4.2.1. A structure is stable when it has a wide base and slightly smaller top and make sure that both sides of the structure is symmetrical.

5. Loads

5.1. What are some dynamic loads that can affect my structure?

5.1.1. The weather, like perception can, man-made things can too. Like a plane crashing down or something.

5.2. What are some static loads that affect my structure?

5.2.1. The human that is controlling it and the load the crane is holding

5.3. What is the dead load that affects my structure?

5.3.1. The ground or truck or whatever it is on. Maybe even the box it's in.
