1. Support the Family

1.1. The family is the number 1 resource on the child!

1.2. Recognize and respect the culture and language

1.2.1. They might have different customs, like shaking hands

1.2.2. Engage an interpreter when needed

1.2.2.1. If using a child, try and limit usage and do not use them for important or difficult conversations

1.3. Share information with the family

1.3.1. Share routines and how school works if they don't have another student in the family

1.3.2. Share how the Kindergarten Program here works, and the importance of play

1.3.3. Share information on Canadian weather and clothing needed for school

1.4. Support the use of the first language in the home and of the students speaking it at home.

1.5. Invite the parents to join the class

1.5.1. They can share customs or information about them (work, cooking, language, etc) or read a book in any language

1.5.2. Invite them just to volunteer

1.5.3. Invite objects from home to use in the dramatic play centre

2. Inclusivity in the classroom

2.1. Use labels and symbols around the room

2.1.1. label outdoor clothes

2.1.2. label clocks/ display times for eating and sometime

2.1.3. have 'experts' who can help students (i.e. zipper experts and helpers)

2.2. Have diverse materials in the classroom and learning centres

2.2.1. offer books and signs in their first language

2.2.2. ask families to send in materials from their home for the dramatic play centre (i.e. yogurt containers or empty boxes)

2.3. Encourage students to speak their first language, to others that speak it or just in general

2.3.1. encourage them to teach words or counting in their language if they are comfortable

2.4. Pronounce the student's name properly

3. Support the English Language Learner

3.1. Learn some words in their language

3.2. Encourage the student to read and story tell in their first language

3.3. Allow them to speak their first language or be silent

3.3.1. Observe student if they are not speaking, to see what they enjoy and are able to do, and how they communicate with others who speak their language

3.4. Give the student time to learn, and time to be alone

3.5. Pair up the student with another who speaks their language if possible, to learn the routines
