Exhibition Organisation

1. Inside the POI
1.1. OPPORTUNITY: More focused and organised when working under a specific theme. Beneficial for some learners and teachers who crave structure.
1.2. OPPORTUNITY: Potentially makes time management easier and allows all TD themes to be explored during the year.
1.3. OPPORTUNITY: Easy to find connections between topics and groups when under the same TD theme.
1.4. CHALLENGE: Relatively restricted in comparison to having complete autonomy and choice.
1.5. CHALLENGE: Less supportive of agency.
1.6. CHALLENGE: Potentially less flexible timeframe.
2. Earlier in the year (as a unit in term 2)
2.1. CHALLENGE: The learners may not yet be ready as they need to explore the IB elements, including TD themes, in more depth in accordance with age group.
2.2. OPPORTUNITY: Would allow more effective reporting and reflecting.
2.3. OPPORTUNITY: Would allow further inquiry and actions after the official end of Exhibition to be assisted by the learning community.
2.4. OPPORTUNITY: Learners have already had one term/semester to become more aware of expectations for IB elements at this level.
3. Throughout the year (in parallel to other units)
3.1. CHALLENGE: Need to go in-depth with some units before working on Exhibition in parallel to other units to consolidate essential elements.
3.2. OPPORTUNITY: Can spend lots of time researching and inquiring if started earlier.
3.3. OPPORTUNITY AND CHALLENGE: Some would be ready but others would be overwhelmed if started early.
3.4. OPPORTUNITY: May be able to connect new/developed concepts and ideas from units to their own inquiry.
4. Outside the POI
4.1. CHALLENGE: Possibility of having to skip a TD theme or rush through all TD themes.
4.2. CHALLENGE: May lead to a lack of in-depth inquiry in particular TD themes.
4.3. CHALLENGE: May not be suitable for some schools, depending on an organisational (timetable) and content (external exams) perspective.
4.4. CHALLENGE: May not benefit those with limited time management skills (teachers and students).
4.5. OPPORTUNITY: Complete student agency over their Exhibition. More choice and ownership.
4.6. OPPORTUNITY: Allows more creativity with time management if used constructively.
4.7. OPPORTUNITY: More flexible timeframe.
4.8. OPPORTUNITY: Potential to make connections between different TD themes.
5. At the end of the year (as a unit in term 3)
5.1. OPPORTUNITY: Learners should be totally ready after exploring all other TD themes.
5.2. OPPORTUNITY: It would emphasis the concept of culminating learning experience.
5.3. OPPORTUNITY; Learners would stay tuned till the end of the year and won't feel like the are done with the major event already.
5.4. CHALLENGE: At the end of the year would be quite challenging for teachers to keep up with reports, students-led conference and portfolios. Could teachers really devote the necessary time to guide an inquiry?
5.5. CHALLENGE: What if a learner is ready and they have a clear passion? Why are they being forced to wait?
