1. What is a PSA?

1.1. Definitions

5. Planning your own PSA - Answer the following

5.6. Production Structure

6. USE A TEMPLATE: Red Cross Preparedness Example (total running time 1:30)

6.1. BEFORE YOU START TONE: Think about how you want your audience to feel when they see this (on a scale from 'concerned' to 'really scared') How will you keep there attention? You can use humor or shock to hook them before you deliver the useful info in a serious and kind/helpful way.

6.2. GOALS: 1. Get their attention. 2. Give them clear info in a way they will remember.

6.3. 1. Title card: Name the disaster & goal

6.3.1. TEMPLATE: Use text and background design to name your disaster and the goal of this PSA. Example: How to be prepared during a (disaster name)

6.3.2. PURPOSE: tell the audience what they're about to see (flood info), and what the point is that you want them to take away (how to be prepared).

6.4. 2. Visual Intro to the disaster type

6.4.1. PURPOSE: Use video or image(s) that show someone what the risk is.

6.4.2. TEMPLATE: Show Video clips, cartoons, or a slideshow of images with narration as voice over.

6.5. 3. Definie the disaster (what it is, scientific facts)

6.5.1. TEMPLATE 1: Use background images or videos of. your disaster and add voiceover narration (audio only) to define the problems your disaster causes. TIP FOR SLIDESHOW: If you decide to use a series of images, have 1 line of narration per image.

6.5.2. TEMPLATE 2: Use background images or video, and add a student narrator video in front of the disaster background. PROCESS: Film a student narrator defining the problems your disaster causes. VIDEO RECORDING TIP: Flim in front of a blank background because we will be removing the background from your video

6.5.3. PURPOSE: Explain what it is, and hook the audience with fear, concern or humor.

6.5.4. CONTENT: 1. A _______ (disaster type) is... 2. (Disaster type)______ can occur when 1, 2, 3... things happen.

6.5.5. NARRATOR TONE: Think about how your tone will affect the audience: Does your voice sound friendly or scary? Are you smiling while you deliver the info? Do you look really concerned and worried?

6.6. 4. Explain things that could go wrong (3 research-based examples)

6.6.1. RISK TEMPLATE: Show images or video clips connected to at least 3 risks of the disaster. OPTION 1: Use simple text over the image. For Example: "Car Flooding" OPTION 2: Use audio only narration (voice over) OPTION 3: Use video narrator combine the options above any way that works!

6.6.2. TIP FOR SLIDESHOW: Use 1 graphic with 1 voice recording for each tip.

6.6.3. VISUAL TIP: Background images/video of the floods should support what they are saying. If they mention driving through flood water, show an image of a flooded car in the background.

6.7. 5. Emphasize preparedness! (slogan or statement)

6.7.1. PURPOSE: remind them that they need to be ready! And set up your section on tips!

6.7.2. TEMPLATE: Any way you want! Text on screen, Video of student(s) speaking/shouting "Get prepared!" Make sure the tone is effective!

6.8. 6. How to Prepare (3 research-based tips)

6.8.1. TIP TEMPLATE: Show a video clip or image that represents an important detail, use audio narration or a video narrator on screen to explain the tip.

6.8.2. CONTENT: What should they do? How do they prepare themselves to do it?

6.8.3. TEMPLATE: Show a graphic with a voiceover.

6.9. 7. Review & build confidence: "Remember: Turn around, don't drown!"

6.10. 8. Give a resource to learn more "Visit the redcross.org online, and download their emergency app."

6.10.1. TEMPLATE: show text on screen with resources. show graphics that support the theme (optional)

6.11. Add Animations and Transitions

6.11.1. Add transitions between scenes.

6.11.2. Pace - give them time to think between bits of info.

6.12. Last step: Add Music

6.12.1. TONE: Music will affect how your audience feels. How do you want your audience to feel? Scared but safe? Terrified? What music will put them in the right mood to care, and be calm enough to listen and learn?
