1. Theme

1.1. Explanation

1.1.1. If a book’s theme is coming of age, that means the story has gone through parts or the entire life of the main character.

1.2. Definition

1.2.1. A story's view on life.

1.3. Example from the story

1.3.1. Coming of a age would be a theme since the story goes through a part of the narrator's life.

1.3.2. Friendship is also evident in the story. This is shown Taro's friendships with Togan, Yoshitoki and Lord Zakoji

1.3.3. A theme of honor / respect is also in the story. This is mostly shown in the narrator's relationship with Lord Akiyama however the narrator still has respect towards the other lords and his friends.

2. Setting

2.1. Explanation

2.1.1. A setting would be the place and time of the story.

2.2. Definition

2.2.1. The location and time of a story/novel.

2.3. Example from the story

2.3.1. Feudal Japan

2.3.2. Castles, battlefields, strongholds, villages, fields / plains

2.3.3. Different locations / regions in Japan

3. Tone

3.1. Explanation

3.1.1. If a story has a happy tone, that means the author is adding detail, thoughts, etc to make the story seem currently happy.

3.2. Definition

3.2.1. The author’s attitude towards the audience or reader.

3.3. Example from the story

3.3.1. The story has a sad tone during Togan's death.

3.3.2. The tone in the beginning of the story (during the attack) was chaotic and scary.

3.3.3. The tone when the narrator found out that Yoshitoki was killed was sad and depressing which reflected the narrator's feelings.
