1. The three types of relationships between songs and videos

1.1. Illustration

1.1.1. The video will tell the story of the lyric, often accompanied by dance in the video which is used to express the mood of the song.

1.2. Amplification

1.2.1. The video will add extra layers to the meaning of the song but does not contradict the lyrics of the song.

1.3. Disjuncture

1.3.1. The video will contradict the lyrics of the song.

2. Reasons for different narrative structures:

2.1. Songs do not pose traditional narrative structures which becomes a problem because pop videos are built around songs.

2.2. Pop videos use the artist as both the character and the narrator.

2.3. An artist is to look directly into the camera in order to extend their performance to the audience and involve them.

3. Repetition

3.1. Shots are repeated the same as a chorus in a song.

3.2. Sound is repeated to influence a familiarity with the audience.

4. Structure

4.1. Pop songs follow a structure of a beginning, a middle (the climax) and an end.

4.2. The music video will often reflect upon this structure.
