1. Plans for department:

1.1. Consistent framework of thinking, reading & writing process to be introduced starting from Sec 1 (E.g. Thinking Routine: Circle of Viewpoints and Critical Thinking Framework (Paul's Wheel) that can be applied to both reading and writing

1.2. Build up teachers' SCK in writing expositions to show how to use the framework (AcoLade)

1.3. Deployment: Follow-up system, mix of ET and BT within each level

1.4. ICT to support teachers in T&L

2. Analysis of Shared Issue

2.1. Gap in curriculum between upper and lower sec

2.2. upper sec students can't write good expository essays as they do not have a strong foundation/exposed at lower sec and content

2.3. Lower Sec focused on Narratives, Descriptives and Recounts but Expositions at Upper Sec

3. Strategies to address the issue

3.1. (CLLIPS) Spiral Progression

3.1.1. Teaching of text types: Sec 1 - intro to Discursive essays; Sec 2 - move on to Persuasive, Argumentative; Sec 3 and 4 focus on Reflective Exposition, and Mixed Genre;

3.2. AcoLade (structuring consolidation)

3.3. CASES (Contextual)

3.3.1. To address Students' lack of content knowledge: Use themes that are sustained throughout the four years but discussed in different text types (E.g., science fiction as narrative, science and tech as exposition)

3.3.2. Provision of rich texts of different levels of difficulty that can be fodder for thought when it comes to generation of ideas for their essays

4. Providing a Thinking Framework such that the process of planning to write is made more explicit- These set of skills can possibly be applied across genres as well
