1. Formative Assessments

1.1. Definition: A formative assessment is given during the course of a unit and is used to show the teacher whether or not the student is actually understanding the material. If the student does not understand, the teacher can then revisit any concepts as needed.

2. Summative Assessments

2.1. Definition: Summative assessments are used to show a summary of everything the student knows at the end of a unit. It is a comprehensive test that covers all concepts from the unit and is usually what determines the student's grade for that unit.

3. Interim/Benchmarks

3.1. Definition: These type of assessments measure a student's growth over time. They are given at certain intervals in order to help a teacher understand where a student is at with the curriculum.

4. Performance

4.1. Defintion: In performance assessments, students have to demonstrate their learning by actually carrying out a task

5. Diagnostic

5.1. Definition: This type of assessment is given in order to diagnose strengths, weaknesses, and needs of a student. It is given prior to instruction because the results are used to drive instruction.
