Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)
by Zabedia Nazim
1. Develop a Research Question
1.1. Identity a teaching and learning problem
1.2. Use reflective practice, talk to colleagues
1.3. Identity a possible action that can be taken to address the problem identified
2. Develop a Research Proposal
2.1. Conduct a literature review and refine your research question
2.2. Determine your target population, sample size, and recruitment methods
2.3. Determine on what data to collect. Determine the research methods to be used to collect data. Determine how you will analyze your data and what tools or software you will need for this
2.4. Consider research ethics and determine whether the research project will require Research Ethics Board (REB) approval before undertaking it. If necessary make sure to obtain REB approval before undertaking any research. Visit your institutional REB to see what is required.
3. Conduct Research
3.1. Recruit participants
3.2. Collect baseline data
3.3. Implement action to address problem identified by the research question
3.4. Collect data that will help answer the research question
3.5. Conduct analysis of data
3.6. Determine research findings based on data analysis. Employ recommended practices for research reliability and validity of findings (e.g. member checking)
4. Share Research Findings
4.1. Share research findings with research participants (reciprocity)
4.2. Share findings with colleagues and organization (e.g. lunch and learns, in-house publications and events)
4.3. Share findings with the wider teaching and learning community (e.g. conferences, publishing in journals, etc...)
4.4. Explore multiple and diverse ways of sharing research findings (e.g. podcasts, vlogs, blogs, videos, posters, etc...), not just the traditional ways (e.g. publishing in academic journals, presenting paper at conferences)
4.5. Explore how research findings can inform your next iteration of SoTL research
