Fairytale News Most Wanted Lesson Plan: Emily Wiebe Grade: 2 Date: October 12, 2023 Topic: ELA Time: TBD Curriculum: - Learners are making design choices for different purposes. - Learners are using what they know about texts and themselves to reflect, set goals, and make decisions. - Recognize, apply, and adapt rules and conventions. - Investigate complex moral and ethical issues and conflicts. Specific Learning Outcomes and Evidence of Learning: - Do they use proper capitalization? - Do they use proper punctuation? - Can they summarize the story? - Can the determine what character did what? - Can they use connectives to form a proper sentence? - Can they apply language from the story? - Does the drawing capture details from the story? Are they accurate? Cross-Curricular/ Real World Connections: - They question what is right/legal - This could go into Social Studies Assessment Evidence: Once they are done, I will get them to show their groupmates their art piece, correct any mistakes they made together, and then they will hand in their posters to me. I will join all the posters together in one big book and we will look through the book as a class. These posters will have representations and writing on them so I will assess their learning. Because I will have a sample of their writing I can assess for learning and of learning. Because they correct themselves and each other, it could be assessment as learning too. This could be FOR, AS, and OF. Materials - Fairytale News Book - Poster template - Markers - Pencils - Whiteboard - Whiteboard markers Vocabulary -Determined by the class but focused on some legal jargon Hook: For this lesson, we will read Fairytale News to begin. This will open a moral conversation about what is right and what is wrong. Acquire/ Book: We will summarize, as a class, The actions of each character and if what they did was right or wrong. These words and phrases that are said will be put up on the board for future reference and for learning. Definitions will be explored and vocabulary will be expanded. There will be a small Google Forms quiz for them to complete to ensure proper comprehension. Apply/ Look: I will then show the class book and explain that they will be making posters using the template that I will provide for Fairytale News’ most wanted. The children will draw pictures of the characters doing wrong things, determine the price that they have to pay, and what crime they think the character has committed. Once they are done, I will get them to show their groupmates their art piece, correct any mistakes they made together, and then they will hand in their posters to me. I will have them make a small podcast segment under a podcast that I have already started. They will add in a description of their project in their podcast episode so that I will have a podcast version of the mentor text. Because they are so young, this will require one on one work and I will have to do the majority of the work for them. Closure/ Took: I will join all the posters together in one big book and we will look through the book as a class. At this time we will also listen to our whole podcast together. Cross-Curricular/ Real World Connections: - What do they know about their environment - Could work for story writing in ELA Assessment Evidence: Because the main objective of this lesson plan is to engage in a conversation that’s for the whole class, the teacher will have to use this as an assessment for learning. The teacher will have to make notes about what each student says and make observations about the class as the discussion evolves. Materials - Google Maps - Meeting Mat Vocabulary -Brandon -Schools -Hotels Hook: Ask some questions about what they notice about Brandon then open Google Maps and engage with the map Acquire/ Book: I just want the students to engage with each other and explore the map. Schools are highlighted so that they can realize that more schools exist than just the one They are in. The universities are highlighted so that they know that there is more school once secondary school is over. The hotels are highlighted so that they can talk about fun experiences. Apply/ Look: I would give students a piece of loose leaf so that they can tell me a story about one of the places that we looked at on the Google map. Closure/ Took: I would open the floor for the students to share their stories with the rest of the class. But he wanted to I would share a little story and then we would move on with the rest of our day.
