Assistive Technology Referal Process

1. Step 1: Referral for Assistive Technology Assessment: After referral is made, the team meets to consider requests. The following info must be considered: Student data, medical data, vision and hearing reports, information about current tech equipment in use, and background about related services provided.

2. Step 4: Implementation of AT Device: After decision making based on assessment results the team purchases the device and implements it. Additional training will be necessary. The special education teacher is responsible for making sure supports are implemented. An ongoing checklist should be utilized to determine the effectiveness of the device.

3. Step 2:Conducting an Assistive Technology Assessment: The instructional program must be tailed to students individualized needs. AT assessments basrf on information gathered from a variety of sources, observations, formal assessments of skills. AT specialists conducts the assessment. The team serves as a crucial role. Assessment includes: cognitive skills, current use of AT devices, sensory skills, motor skills, communication skills, social skills, and interviews with family for concerns and needs of student.

4. Step 3:The individualized Education Program Team: This utilizes the approach with team concept in mind. The team makes decisions as a multidisciplinary team from AT reports provided. During that time device trials will occur and trainings on how to use the devices.
