ATTICUS FINCH by Mind Map: ATTICUS FINCH

1. How others see him...

1.1. After taking the Tom Robinson case, people begin to turn against him.

1.2. His own brother says this of Atticus to Scout and Jem: "I guess it ain't your fault if Uncle Atticus is a nigger-lover besides, but I'm here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family -" pg. 92

1.3. Respected by black people because of what he's doing for Tom Robinson

2. Motivated by...

2.1. The innocence of Tom Robinson... he feels it his duty to serve Tom and get him off the hook. "This case, Tom Robinson’s case, is something that goes to the essence of a man’s conscience—Scout, I couldn’t go to church and worship God if I didn’t try to help that man." pg 116

2.2. His duty to teach his children about how things really should be. "Whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash."pg. 243 Atticus teaching his children what is right.

2.3. The trash talk he gets from the townspeople. "Your father’s no better than the niggers and trash he works for!” - Mrs. Dubose, pg. 113

3. Textual Issues/Concerns...

3.1. It is hard for Atticus because he works in a town plagued by discrimination, so being a lawyer is hard. "The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom, be he any color of the rainbow, but people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box." pg. 243

4. Looks like...

4.1. Wore glasses - "He was nearly blind in his left eye..." pg. 99

4.2. Dresses like a proper lawyer - "...he unbuttoned his vest, unbuttoned his collar, loosened his tie, and took off his coat. He never loosened a scrap of his clothing... to Jem and me, this was the equivalent of him standing before us stark naked." pg. 223

4.3. A foot taller than his brother Jack

5. Beliefs/Values...

5.1. Equality - "Thomas Jefferson once said that all men are created equal..." pg. 226 - This idea is used a lot in his final speech to the court

5.2. Courage - "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." pg. 124

5.3. Clear conscience - "but before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience."pg. 116

5.4. Forgiveness. Even though he is mocked and taunted by Mrs. Dubose, he still finds a way to respect her.
