Some facts on cancer. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Austraila more than 43,000 people are expected to die from cancer in 2010. An estimated 114,000 new cases will be diagnosed in Australia in 2010 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer before they are 85. 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer berfoe they are 85. More than 60% of patients will survive more than five years. Cancer cost $3.8 billion in direct health system costs. $378 million was spent on cancer research in 2000-01, 22% of all health research expenditure in Australia.

Treatment will depend on the type of cancer and where you have it. Some people have chemothreapy, radiation and in most cases surgury.

Diagnoses.

To get diagnosed will be different depending on the form of caner you are being tested for. It can start of with a simple blood test and end up with a biopsy which can be done by a needle stick biopsy or a surgycle biopsy.

Support

Support comes in many forms such as family, friends, profesional, doctors, nurses and the community. The support is out there but it can be hard to find or get access to. The professional sector is often so over worked and a lot of it is not advertised so it usually comes from word of mouth.

Financial.

Cancer puts a real strain on the families finances. In most cases you can't work while having treatment so there is a lack of income coming in. To make things worse you are now spending more money on medication, petrol and you may even have to buy new clothes that fit you better or more comfortable.

family

Cancer does not only affect the person with cancer but the whole family .Your partner may become your carer, your relaionship can change while you are going through treatment. It will affect your children in many ways depending on the type of cancer and your treatment. You might not be able to hold them or say you love them. It affects everybody in the family, but it affects them all differently.
