Classroom Activities

Activities to introduce students to concepts they need to be familiar with in order to excel in the research and analysis portion of the program.  May do some or all of the activities

Diving into Ocean Ecosystems

Need Computer Lab

Students research different habitats and create poster to share with the class

The Ocean Over Time

Students create a time line of human/ocean history

Migration In the Sea

Students work in groups to analyze data about migrating animals

Exploring the Sea Floor

Students are introduced to bathemetry and create a classroom model of the ocean floor

Seasons of Change

Students analyze why we have seasons

Sea Surface

Students analyze sea surface temperature imagery and explain how heat is transferred in the ocean

Voyage to the Deep

Students analyze how pressure, temperature, and light change as depth increases

Students analyze characteristics of different deep diving animals

Photosynthesis

Students describe photosynthesis in the ocean and identify phytoplankton as the major source of O2

Students analyze phytoplankton imagery

Biodiversity

Students biodiversity, compare cell types, analyze similiarites and differences between major groups of organisms

Define and give examples of adaptations

Food Webs

Students construct marine food webs and explain the importance of phytoplankton in the marine food web

Animal Needs and Tracking

Students look at the relationships between what is happening in the ocean and reasons for animal migration

Which Way to the Sea

Students will analyze topographic maps, watersheds

Students will analyze a local body of water

Runoff and Photosynthesis

Students will analyze human impact on ocean using satellite imagery and what happens when excess nutrients are added to bodies of water

Tides

Students will analyze the reason for tides and explain the relationship to tides and reproduction in some organisms

Research

All studnents will complete the first two activities and then they will be divided into groups for the expert research portion of the assignment

Learning to Research

Students will practice using the ACES site

Internet Treasure Hunt

Students will practice researching on the ACES site and search engine to find good information

Student Expert Research

Species Expert, This group will collect information about the animal including needs, habitats, and adaptations

Bathemetry Expert, This group will consider how the ocean floor and depth may play a role in the movement of animals

Phytoplankton Expert, This group will examine photosynthesis, examine chlorophyll concentration satellite imagery, examine effect of currents on phytoplankton

Sea Surface Expert, This group will examine real-time sea surface imagery and explain how the seasons affect the sea surface

Analysis

Online Journaling
