Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? by Mind Map: Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

1. Themes: We had some consistent themes running through our music video and print products.

1.1. Balloons: We had a consistent theme of balloons in both our music video and print products. We put an image of balloons that we took whilst filming the balloon scenes for our music video and used it on the CD and added it to the spine of the CD. This makes it clear on the link between the two and shows what music video the CD links to

1.2. Shadows: We used shadows in both of our products. The shadow of the character dancing was used in the music video and shots of the shadow in a dancing shape was used on the cover of the CD. This creates a link between the two products.

2. House Styles:

2.1. Colour Scheme: Our colour scheme was quite dark for the print products. We wanted to give it the moody and dark feel to fit in with the mood of the music video. This is why we did all shots on a black backdrop to keep it consistent with the dark feel. Also in the music video we did the shots where the artist was lip syncing on a black background so this links them. Our images on the CD are quite shadowed, for example on the front and back of the CD we have shadowed out half of the artist face because it's more mysterious and dark, which is the mood we wanted to stick with.

2.2. Font: Our font was very simplistic. We used ariel for the artists name "The Weeknd" because we had researched on the kind of font The Weeknd typically uses and we saw that it was really simple and sharp so we wanted to stick to something he would use because we wanted to add the main key features the actual artist uses. We used a quite spaced out text for the song name to make it stand out. Our fonts were consistent throughout the print products because we wanted them all to link together neatly. Our font colour for the CD was white because this colour stood out most against the dark theme and was also simple. For the poster we chose colours that were a little different. We put the artist name in grey because it worked well with the colours on the poster and the promotional words in blue to stand out.

3. Imagery:

3.1. On the CD, both front and back, we used images of the artist looking directly at the camera. This is to draw people in and give him that confident look.

3.2. For the front and back of the CD we used medium close ups because the main focus is the artist face and look. Also on the back we only wanted to show the interaction of the artist and female of the arms and not the full thing so the medium close up was the best shot to show this.

3.3. We used a long shot of the artist on the poster because it is portrait so we decide to fit in the full image. It also enabled us to match the colour of the font to the artist jeans so they could both subtly complement each other.

4. Promotions:

4.1. The print products help the music video through using similar themes and ideas from it. For example using balloons and shadows link the two so you know that this product is linked to that video. Furthermore we made sure that the artist had the same look and used interaction with the character in the music video on the print products which also links them and helps to promote the video because if that looks appealing to someone who hasn't seen the video then the print products will encourage people to watch the video and the video will encourage people to buy the album.

4.2. If this was to be put out in the real world then we would put more effort into advertising. We would use the same styles of the poster and promote it on a bigger scale, for example billboards. Also typically you would see the poster in magazines so we would want that distributed in different magazines that are similar to The Weeknd's genre, such as Vibe or XXL.

4.3. Our packaging is similar to other media products because researching on case studies we noticed that a separate font is used for the artist name and the name of the song on posters and CD covers so we followed that typical convention. Also most CD covers use a medium close up so we also followed that convention.

5. Tone/Language:

5.1. We use the typical promotional language on the poster, for example "out..." and "New Single". This is to catch the customers eye and it's quite straight forward so simple language and tone is best to appeal to fans.
