Culture Description: Korea’s language Han’gul consists of 14 consonants and 10 vowels for a total of 24 letters. However, these letters are combined to indicate a single phonetic sound which creates new characters and sounds. Han’gul could better be described as having 40 characters.

Parent expectations: According to the Hofstede Center, South Korea scored a 100 on long term orientation and a 29 on indulgence. This translates into a

very strict childhood. Students are expected to attend school and several other after school programs during the week in order to attain the best possible

future. Wants of the student are rarely considered by the parents when it comes to education.

Differences from English speaking peers: Because the at home language spoken is Han’gul the students often have very little experience with English. By high school the student has usually progressed, however, they still

ostracize themselves from the English speaking student population.

Conflicts faced by ELL students in school: Slower progression is a huge issue. Koreans are naturally very competitive with one another. If a student is seen by his

Han’gul speaking peers as progressing slower, they will be made fun of. They will also be pushed forward to higher levels of English by both the administration and the parents regardless of their actual level of English.
