Schools Should Start Later. Why should schools start later? Schools should start later because kids get more sleep, there is less sleeping in class, and they have less stress. by Mind Map: Schools Should Start Later. Why should schools start later? Schools should start later because kids get more sleep, there is less sleeping in class, and they have less stress.

1. Counter Argument

1.1. Even though kids can just go to sleep earlier instead of going to sleep late the waking up later, it's not that easy. Most kids have homework or after school activities. Some homework won't take that long but if you a lot of homework that can take hours. After school activities also take up extra time of the day. If kids don't have after school activities then they get more time for their homework. But, by the time you have finished your homework or after school activities it is usually pretty late. If you don't have homework or after school activities then maybe you could go to sleep early but its not very likely that you won't have stuff after school.

2. More sleep

2.1. "Teens need 9¼ hours of nightly slumber for optimal performance and health, but two thirds of high school students report sleeping less than 7 hours each night."- ("National Sleep Foundation, Journal of Adolescent Health")

3. less sleeping in class

3.1. ( National Sleeping Foundation found out that 60% of kids that are younger than 18 complained during the day of being tired. The parents of the kids said that 15% of them said that they fell asleep during class in school. If all schools started at least at 8:00am kids would get enough sleep to be more awake in class and not fall asleep.)- ("School Start Time and Sleep, National Sleeping Foundation, Page 2")

4. less stress

4.1. Sleep-deprived students face consequences much greater than feeling drowsy all day. Studies suggest a link between lack of Zzzs and mental illness, a weakened immune system, and a reduced stress threshold. Basically, we’re neglecting a basic survival need while we strive to build a successful future.- (Emi Yasuda "Should Schools Start Later Scope Article")
