1. Safety

1.1. Physical Children wear gloves to protect them from bacteria in the soil entering our body (Legionella disease).

1.2. Cyber All videos shown to the children are watched first then converted to a file to stop any adverts.

2. Specific Learning Goals

2.1. Establish an understanding of what sustainability is

2.2. Investigate household waste identifying items and objects that can be reused.

3. Assessment

3.1. What will you monitor?

3.1.1. Students contributions to what is classified waste and what waste can be reused.

3.1.2. To identify the purpose to growing food.

3.2. How will you record it?

3.2.1. Answers to class questions recorded on a checklist.

3.2.2. Checklist of who contributed to brainstorming sessions.

4. Time Frame - 40 miinutes

5. Resources

5.1. Sustainability video, handout on sustainability, whiteboard for brainstorming, coffee cups, lettuce seedlings, soil, water, spike, cleaning equipment, gloves & Technology books.

6. Questions:

6.1. What is sustainability?

6.2. What does sustainability do for our future?

6.3. Why do we need to reduce the amount of waste we use?

6.4. What are waste items in your house?

6.5. What can we use this disposable coffee cup for?

6.6. What is meant by living for the future?

6.7. Why do we need to grow healthy food?

6.8. What elements do we need to help this lettuce seedling grow?

7. Computational Thinking

8. Aim: Use household rubbish as a container to grow food.

9. Learning Area: Technologies

9.1. Sub Strand: Design and Technologies

9.1.1. Content Descriptors: • Food and fibre choices for healthy living (ACTDEK003) & • Explore design to meet needs or opportunities (WATPPS11)

10. Students prior knowledge

10.1. Students can identify people that produce familiar products and services and recall some simple stages of the production process. They identify plants and animals used for production and their basic needs. In Materials and technologies specialisations, students observe, explore and select materials to use for construction based on materials’ characteristics and behaviours. Students have explored designing products or solutions.

11. Lesson Outline

11.1. Introduction

11.2. Hook: View video about sustainability

11.3. Body

11.4. Explicit Teaching: Sustainability •The world we live in today will not sustain human activity for many more decades. •Global warning, climate change, land fill problems, damaged ecosystems and shortage of crops. •Our responsibility to take care of our environment and the world we live in.

11.5. Introduce reusing disposable coffee cups to plant a lettuce

11.6. Think-Pair-Share:

11.7. Demonstrate planting seedling in cup •Explain safety requirements e.g. wearing gloves to stop bacteria in the soil entering our body (Legionella disease). •Put name on cup and place soil in cup. •Place seedling in soil and water. •Position seedling in a sunny location in the classroom.

11.8. Conclusion

11.9. Reinforce sustainability meaning from the students and identify what it can be reused to stop landfill.

12. Year Level: 2

13. Cross Curriculum: Math, English, Science, Physical Education (healthy eating) & STEM.
