1. M1: 21ST CENTURY LEARNING

1.1. IMPLICATION: Digital Immigrants are trying to educate Digital Natives who think and process differently than we do; literally speaking a different language!

1.2. READING RESOURCES: 1. An Educators Guide to the 4 C's; 2. Partnership for 21st Century Learning; 3. Visual Learning in the 21st Century.

1.3. KEY FOCUS: Digital Natives vs/ Digital Immigrants

1.4. TAKE AWAY: To teach Digital Natives common core standards, we must know and embed 21st Century Skills into our instructional practices (The 4 C's)

2. M2: COMPUTER BASED CONCEPT MAPPING

2.1. KEY FOCUS: Electronic graphic organizers represent concepts and the relationships between them in digital form.

2.2. IMPLICATION: Concept mapping can help students externalize their understanding and can help teachers visualize what their students learned.

2.3. TAKE AWAY: Electronic GO are easier to manipulate, edit, revise, share, and animate.

2.4. READING RESOURCES: 1. Computer Based Concept Mapping; 2. Integrate Inspiration into your Curriculum; 3. A Smorgasboard of Graphic Organizers at Eduplace; 4. Teachers First Edge

3. M3: ROLE OF GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS AND CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS

3.1. IMPLICATION: Combining critical thinking techniques creates the foundation by which students are more capable to understanding content knowledge at the most rigorous level possible.

3.2. KEY FOCUS: Graphic Organizers are a effective tool to embed and support Critical Thinking Skills.

3.3. READING RESOURCES: 1. Blooms Taxonomy Blooms Digitally (my favorite so far in this course!); 2. Seven Strategies to Teach Text Comprehension.

3.4. TAKE AWAY: Critical thinking skills must be implicitly taught so scaffolds can be built as shown by the example of Ms. Hagevik's lesson.

4. M7: APPLICATIONS FOR MY CLASS

4.1. FOCUS: How will I use more effective graphic organizers to accomplish my student learning goals?

4.2. IMPLICATION: I can clearly see missed opportunities for myself to utilize more technology in my instruction with the application/assignment of various graphic organizers. Until this point, all the organizers I used were paper and pencil.

4.3. TAKE AWAY: Hi, my name is Lisa and I'm a digital Immigrant :( Good news though is that there are easy opportunities for me to use electronic GO beginning TOMORROW! For example, my KWL's will now be in an electronic format and all my bubble/double bubbles will be as well. Next steps for me is to request a dedicated laptop cart and assemble a team committee to share what else I've learned here and see where the other electronic GO possibilities exist in our teaching strategies.

4.4. READING RESOURCES: 1. Attack of the Teenage Brain!: Understanding and Supporting the Weird and Wonderful Adolescent Learner (2018) by John Medina; 2. Authentic Learning in the Digital Age: Engaging Students Through Inquiry (2014) by Larissa Pahomov

5. M4: THE FOUR C'S

5.1. IMPLICATION: The Four C's must be fully integrated into all curriculums if we are to prepare and produce 21st century citizens.

5.2. READING RESOURCES: 1. A Guide to the Four C's; 2. On Being connected: George Siemens Presentation

5.3. KEY FOCUS: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity.

5.4. TAKE AWAY: Our educational institutions were designed to empower an economy and society that no longer exists. Our global society, interconnectivity, and innovative product needs requires the kind of instructional support outlined in NEA's The Four C's

6. M5: GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

6.1. IMPLICATION: There very much is the "right" GO for the "right" objective. Until my personal expertise in this domain improves, I should feel comfortable seeking the reviews and advise of others (such as blogger David Warlick and others) to make the best instructional decisions as possible.

6.2. READING RESOURCES: 1. 2 cents Worth; 2. The EGO Project

6.3. TAKE AWAY: There are more electronic graphic organizers out there and available than I ever, ever imagined!!! I intend on creating a resource list the very first chance I get so that I can intentionally practice and learn as many as possible for my science classes.

6.4. KEY FOCUS: The educational community has taken note of the value various graphic organizers have added to our student's experiences and there are professionals that dedicate much of their time and expertise to vetting the onslaught of GO resources being developed and shared.

7. M6: LEARNING AND CREATING

7.1. KEY FOCUS: Valuing and nurturing the inherent creative skills of our students is the change agent necessary for transformational educational systems.

7.2. IMPLICATION: Our schools today by way of standardized testing and narrow curriculums educate students OUT of their creative capacities rather than into them. This will leave them especially ineffective as educated adults required to solve problems and address the needs of economies that are yet to exist.

7.3. READING RESOURCES: 1. Schools Must Validate Artistic Expression

7.4. TAKE AWAY: Creativity needs to be viewed as an indicator of intelligence and its facilitation in our schools is as important as literacy and mathematics.
