Memory von Mind Map: Memory

1. Brain Structures Involved in Memory is the Hippocampus

1.1. The Hippocampus is responsible in the Storage memory consolidation.

1.2. The hippocampus is also responsible for the Retrieval in the brain

1.3. The Amygdala and other part of the brain is responsible for

2. Storage

2.1. This is where retraining information is more or less passive to process in the brain.

2.2. Example: Having a conversation and no remembering when it took place.

2.2.1. Consolidation is where recent information is process into the LTM. By structural an chemical changes in the nervous system which strength the synaptic connections between neuron

2.2.2. An example of consolidation is learning how to drive a car. It is very important to follow the rules in driving, so the new information is storage in LTM.

2.2.3. Retrieval is the subsequent re-accessing of life events or information, from the past, which was previously encoded and stored in the brain.

2.2.4. An example of retrieval is remembering someone’s name after not seeing them for a while.

3. Long-Term Memory

3.1. It is in contrast to short-term memory, and is also known as the Atkinson-Shiffrin memory.

3.2. Definition: It is where informative knowledge is stored indefinitely.

3.3. It is not located in a specific area on the brain. As the hippocampus is the catalyst of LTM, but the actually memory traces are coded at different places of the cortex.

3.4. Example: Can be a recollection of an important day in our life or past.

4. Short-Term Memory

4.1. Also known as the working memory

4.2. It’s also referred to as the brain’s post-it note and acts sort of like a scratch-pad.

4.3. This is a temporary recall of information that is process, at any point in time, but only remains if an amount of information of 7 items or less for a short period of time

4.4. It is located in the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex and it plays a role in mental functions

4.5. Example: Remembering a phone number, which it consists of 7 to 9 numbers
