Methods of Engagement
von Shannon Colonna
1. Module 1-Overview of Engagement Methods:
1.1. SWBAT Create a presentation using PowerPoint, Prezi, video, or another application suitable for teaching others about a specific engagement method. SWBAT Remember and implement methods when given scenarios through a multiple choice quiz.
2. Course Goal: This course will educate teachers on methods should be implemented into the classroom to engage and motivate students to adhere to class curriculum and strive for success.
3. Audience: This course is intended for elementary educators of all classroom types: general education, inclusion, and self-contained classrooms. This course serves both teachers struggling to engage all learners or manage a classroom with difficult behaviors, as well as teachers who are simply looking to improve their knowledge and pedagogy.
4. Course Outcomes: Rather than having students misclassified or placed into classroom settings that are inappropriate for students, teachers (students of this course) will understand that engagement methods are necessary and purposeful in improving learning qualities for all students. Students will apply these learning strategies and create lesson plans that engage all learners.
5. Module 2-Evaluating the Effectiveness of Engagement Methods:
5.1. SWBAT Analyze and identify each method of engagement as well as compare and contrast each method to identify the pros and cons of each. SWBAT Evaluate effective engagement methods through peer reviewed articles and controlled experiments with students.
6. Module 3- Implementing Engagement Methods
6.1. SWBAT Apply and implement an engagement method into the classroom over the span of an 2 week module, through documentation and recordings of their findings. SWBAT evaluate effective behavior by critiquing each methods used/experimented with.
7. Module 4- Applying Methods and Creation:
7.1. SWBAT Apply and discuss methods both learned and already used to improve motivation. SWBAT Create and teach a lesson plan utilizing one of the methods we have learned about in this course.
8. Module 5- Reflecting upon the Outcomes:
8.1. SWBAT Analyze the effects of engagement methods by surveying students after each lesson and each method used, reflecting upon experiments through a 500 word writeup. SWBAT Understand different methods of engagement as well as the reasoning behind using engagement strategies and the effects they have on students behaviors and overall attitude toward learning through discussion boards.
9. Transformation: Students will go from believing that their own students with difficult behaviors should be classified or placed in a self contained, to knowing that the classroom management that is in place and the engagement methods used can and should be used as motivation to improve the overall quality of learning and instruction.
