2. DEFINION OF REPORTED SPEECH

2.1. a speaker's words reported in subordinate clauses governed by a reporting verb, with the required changes of person and tense (e.g. he said that he would go, based on I will go ).

3. REPORTED SPEECH

3.1. Simple Present ⇨ Simple Past

3.1.1. I am from Spain. ⇨ He said he was from Spain

3.2. Present continuous ⇨ Past continuous

3.2.1. I am resting on the sofa. ⇨ He said he was resting on the couch.

3.3. Simple past ⇨ Past perfect

3.3.1. I drove to Paris yesterday. ⇨ He said he had driven to Paris the day before.

4. Modals Verbs

4.1. The verb tense changes in the indirect style also with some of the modal verbs.

4.1.1. With "would", "could", "should", "might" and "ought to", the time does not change
