1. fungi
1.1. the largest living thing is a honey fungus colony which is growing below a forest in Oregon
1.2. eukaryotic cells with cell walls
1.3. heterotrophs which absorb food through their cell walls
1.4. the cells of fungi are arranged into hyphae
1.4.1. threadlike cubes which give fungi structure and releases chemicals which breaks down food that is later absorbed by the hyphae
1.5. some are decomposers which consume dead organisms and some are parasites that attack living hosts
1.6. currently, there are no vaccines which contain the ability to prevent fungal infections
2. protists
2.1. eukaryotic organisms which aren't classified as plants, animals, or fungi
2.2. mainly live in moist environment where humans usually interact
2.3. most are harmless but the harmful protists are parasites, and can cause illness and diseases
2.3.1. parasites benefits from living in, on, or with a host
2.4. two types of parasites are Giardia and Plasmodium
2.4.1. Giardia attaches to the small intestine and prevents nutrients from entering humans by taking them in
2.4.2. Plasmodium is carried by mosquitoes and when they bite, the Plasmodium infects red blood cells and causes malaria
3. all of these are known as PATHOGENS
4. viruses
4.1. is not alive due to lack of characteristics of living things
4.1.1. doesn't reproduce on it's own
4.1.1.1. causes host cell to reproduce more viruses
4.1.2. doesn't use food for energy or to grow
4.1.3. doesn't respond to stimuli
4.2. multiple viruses attacking cells can cause a disease
4.2.1. can be stopped by vaccines
4.2.1.1. made of weaker versions of the virus to trigger the body to produce chemicals which will stop the viruses
5. bacteria
5.1. can be autotrophs
5.1.1. makes its own food
5.1.2. plant like
5.2. unicellular
5.3. no nucleus
5.4. can be heterotrophs
5.4.1. finds its own food
5.4.2. animal like
5.5. can be good or bad
5.5.1. but only 1% of the time bacteria are harmful
5.6. are extremely small
5.7. make up most of the organisms on Earth
5.8. give off toxins which can cause serious infections
5.8.1. toxins are chemicals that damage cells and tissues
5.9. prokaryotes
5.10. contain cell wall and cell membranes
5.10.1. cell wall protect them from attacks and prevent them from drying out
5.10.2. cell membrane controls what comes in and out of cells
5.11. cannot escape intense heat so they use endospore
5.11.1. the endospore is a thick-walled shell formed around genes and cytoplasm
5.11.2. endospore can grow back
